Under general supervision, performs routine to complex maintenance and repairs to City vehicles, heavy and specialized equipment.

  • Prepare work orders; discusses service requests with customers to determine the nature and type of repairs or maintenance needed; prioritizes repair requests.
  • Performs general and advanced diagnosis; makes minor and major repairs as needed.
  • Operates a personal computer to perform diagnostics of units or equipment.
  • Performs major overhauls of automotive and heavy equipment, including engines, transmissions, suspensions, axles and related items
  • Diagnosis and repairs hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Assesses electrical problems and determines the appropriate repairs.
  • Prepares parts requests.
  • Performs engine tune-ups and fuel injection diagnosis.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on specialized units and equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance services and repair schedules.
  • Performs inspections of City units.
  • Tests units or equipment after repairs are completed.
  • Fabricates various parts.
  • May perform welding projects.
  • May perform road service calls.
  • May perform general building maintenance and repairs.
  • Ensures that safety rules and regulations are followed.
  • Maintains a clean work area.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent; AND three years of advanced automotive/motorized equipment maintenance and repair experience; ORan equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
  • Possession of a valid Texas Class C or B Commercial Driver’s License.
  • May require Texas Inspector license.
  • May require Freon service license.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both in an outdoor and indoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, potential physical harm, extreme weather conditions and hazardous chemicals. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. May be required to work within confined spaces. May be required to climb ladders.
