The Position

Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The Nevada Department of Corrections has a vacancy for a Psychiatric Nurse 2 at Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC), in Carson City, Nevada. Incumbent will work both inpatient and outpatient units for the mentally ill inmates. Work days and shifts may vary dependent on the facility needs. Incumbents will be passing medications, triaging medical conditions, performing physical assessments, processing intakes, responding to medical emergencies and other duties as assigned. Applicants should be aware that this position does not entail only psychiatric duties, but also significant medical responsibilities. Duties may be primarily medical. The incumbent assists in the development and implementation of care plan management; communicates plans with team members by attending treatment team and use of inter-shift report as appropriate; psychotherapeutic interventions; identify inmate's response to health problems and help inmates modify or eliminate those issues that are dysfunctional; employ least restrictive measure to ensure safety of patient and staff; formulate modifications of psychotherapeutic techniques; performs patient interaction; encourages patient participation in developing a self-care plan; protect patient's rights and confidentiality; medical intervention; and document all medical interventions per protocol. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities; OR one year of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or Associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience. Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
