Why you’ll love this position: The highway safety intern provides engineering support to individual units within the Highway Safety and Traffic Division by reviewing and analyzing traffic data to identify concerns and recommend corrective action in order to make improvements in traffic flow, congestion, and safety. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.
What you’ll do: - Reviews and analyzes real-time and historical traffic data to identify concerns and recommend corrective actions to optimize the safety and performance of existing infrastructure.
- Reviews policies, standards, and other criteria pertaining to signing, pavement marking, signals, lighting, crash records, permits, work zone, and access to make improvements or ensure compliance and improve the reliability and safety of roadways.
- Assists in the preparation of transportation related reports, correspondence, and performance measures; may support project development activities as a member of a core team.
- Assists in facilitating and organizing statewide teams for various traffic engineering subject areas.
- Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications - Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours); for engineering candidates, program must be ABET-accredited
- Must possess, and maintain, an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher out of 4.0.
- Must have completed at least 30 credit hours. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
Special Working Conditions: - This is a wage, non-benefits eligible position, working no more than 1,039 hours per year.
- The typical working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
