    POSITION OVERVIEW

    WORKDAYS & HOURS: Shift work to include m andatory overtime, weekends, holidays and disaster recovery ***subject to change***

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    This individual will perform unskilled physical labor in the collection of municipal solid waste and recyclable material. Participates in a Solid Waste Management Department on-the-job training program to obtain skills and knowledge to become a sideloader operator by training to drive the refuse (rear-end loader) equipment. The sideloader operator trainee’s primary responsibilities will be working from the back of the truck. This position requires mandatory overtime on scheduled workdays, weekends, holidays, and in response to disaster recovery efforts. Collects household garbage from city curbs. Empties and cleans truck. Answers citizens’ questions regarding proper contents, packing weight, container types, pick-up times and placement of containers. May perform special assignments as directed. MUST PROVIDE OWN SAFETY SHOES.

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    The position requires extensive, near-continuous physical exertion such as repeated lifting of very heavy objects (more than 80 pounds), deep bending, climbing steps and/or assuming awkward positions. There are frequent exposures to extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases and substances, and/or contagious diseases or physical trauma conditions of a short-term disabling nature, such as broken bones or temporary loss of sight or hearing. Requires the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make rapid closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within somewhat fine tolerance demands; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements within fine tolerances with large equipment as an extension of the worker.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
    Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    No experience is required.

    LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
    Must obtain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License within six months from hire. Must have a valid Class C Texas Driver’s License and comply with the City of Houston’s policy on driving.

    PREFERENCES

    Preference will be given to applicants who have a valid Class A or B CDL. Applicants that can deliver great customer service to Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) Customers are a plus. W illing to work a flexible schedule, dependable, have a good work ethic and team-oriented.

    **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
