    The Animal Health Technician will work closely with our veterinarians to provide the highest quality medical and surgical care to the animals in the shelter. This position will assist with minor surgical procedures and help prepare the animals for surgery, monitoring the animals while under anesthesia, and manage the animals through post-op recovery. They will provide vaccinations and wellness tasks and reports any abnormalities, sickness, or injuries in a timely manner. Administers medical treatments to animals, accurately maintains medical records including data collection and entry.

    Job Description:

    1.Monitors the health and welfare of animals within the shelter and provides medical care under the direction of staff Veterinarians; to include performing physical examinations, vaccinations, in-house laboratory tests, collecting specimens, and performing diagnostics to determine and evaluate the health condition of animals at the time of impound or prior to adoption or surgery.

    2.Assists Veterinarians in surgery to include preparing and administering pre-anesthetics and induction agents, monitoring the animal during surgery, and providing post-operative care.

    3.Assists in the euthanasia of animals identified by Veterinarians or shelter management with understanding and compassion for the animal.

    4.Assists Veterinarians with emergency care and treatment in life-threatening situations. Implants microchips in sheltered animals. Prepares, transports, and documents specimens for rabies testing, and reports results.

    5.Maintains accurate and relevant written and electronic records of medical treatments, care provided, and physical condition of animals, including those of unknown health and temperament.

    6.Assists other staff with animals; contributes to the programs and services that support the shelter’s live outcome goal.

    7.Attends training.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year of work experience, including six (6) months of experience in a field related to the job.

    Notes to Candidate:

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Demonstrated experience inducing, monitoring & recovering anesthesia in patients, using anesthesia/monitoring equipment, assisting as a surgical tech.
    • Experience with positioning of animals for radiology.
    • Demonstrated skill in safely handling animals, including those with behavior issues.
    • Experience handling/restraining dogs over 50 lbs.
    • Experience giving injections, oral medications, and drawing blood, placing IV catheters and managing IV medications, fluids and monitoring.
    • Demonstrated experience with animal diseases, common treatments for diseases, and knowledge of medications.
    • Experience with entering accurate medical concerns, vaccinations, administration of medications in the appropriate software.

    Pay Rate: $23.13 - $27.57/hour

    Hours: 40 Hours per week - Varies
    (4) 10-hour+ shifts.
    8:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Surgery is staggered from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.


    Shifts will include one day being a weekend day.

    PLEASE NOTE: Austin Animal Center is not a 100% remote operation.

    This position is considered “essential;” employees may be required to report to work when the City of Austin offices are otherwise closed (bad weather, etc.).

    Driving Requirement:
    This position requires a Valid Class “C” Texas Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months. The job offer is contingent on having a driving record that meets the City’s Driver Record Evaluation Standards.

    If you are selected for hire: You must provide proof of education which may include your official college transcript, High School diploma, GED or equivalent degree and your professional licenses. A Criminal Background check (CBI) will be conducted.
