    Only current MoDOT employees will be considered.

    The apprenticeship program is expected to be approximately 2 years (based on prior experience) to allow candidates to develop the necessary skills for a mechanical background. Candidates accepted into the program will retain their existing job title series and salary for the duration of the program, but reporting supervisor will be updated. Participants will gain experience and be expected to pass job skills assessments to remain in the program. If unable to pass a competency, they may be removed from the program.

    Why you’ll love this position: The Equipment Technician Apprenticeship Program is designed to create more career development opportunities for MoDOT employees while increasing the number of applicants for the Equipment Technician position. Successful completion of the apprenticeship program would serve as an equivalent to the current minimum job qualifications of needing to have completed a formal post-secondary technical training program in one or more of the following: diesel mechanics, auto mechanics, or heavy equipment-related repair.

    This program covers the core competencies employees must be able to perform as an Equipment Technician. Selected candidate will work alongside Equipment Technicians and Equipment Technician Supervisors. The apprentice will be trained in a wide variety of functions and evaluated in competencies such as:

    • Works safely; proactive towards safety; plans, performs and completes task safely.
    • Demonstrates a strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
    • Exhibits strong work ethic, initiative, and communication.
    • Adaptability to learn and master new skills and techniques as technology evolves.
    • Proficient hands-on skills with tools and machinery.
    • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical issues.
    • Proficiency in reading and understanding service manuals, technical diagrams, and schematics.
    • Thorough understanding of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
    • Performs duties with high level of quality & efficiency; co meback or rework rate at l ess than 3%.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • A minimum of six months of employment at MoDOT. Must be a current MoDOT e mployee.
    • Applicants should be successful in their current position, exhibit MoDOT’s Preferred Employee Qualities.docx and model MoDOT's Values .
    • The employee should not have any disciplinary action within six months of applying for the program.


    Special Working Conditions:

    • Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance.
    • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
    • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
    • Participants will be expected to pass job skills assessments to remain in the program. If unable to pass a competency, they may be removed from the program.


    Application process:

    Interested candidates will need to fill out an Equipment Tech Apprenticeship Application form in addition to the MoCareers application. The Equipment Tech Apprenticeship Application can be forwarded to SEHR or uploaded to your MoCareers application no later than December 7, 2025, deadline to apply. Applications will be reviewed, and candidates will be selected for interview.
