    Job Description

    SUMMARY: Under general supervision, Street Technician II performs and assists in coordinating street maintenance and repair operations. This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment, ensuring safety compliance, and helping monitor and improve street system processes.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Operate a full range of construction and heavy equipment including backhoes, front-end loaders, and hydraulic excavators.
    • Perform skilled street construction and maintenance tasks.
    • Monitor street conditions and propose improvements.
    • Lead small work crews and provide direction as needed.
    • Record and analyze street data using digital tools.
    • Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with regulations.
    • Maintain comprehensive records and assist in training lower-level staff.
    • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
    • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.


    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
    • Thorough understanding of street maintenance practices, tools, and materials.
    • Leadership skills and ability to coordinate tasks and personnel.
    • Intermediate data analysis and problem-solving abilities.
    • Strong recordkeeping, safety awareness, and communication skills.


    • Ability to read and understand basic maps, instructions, and safety protocols.

    • Basic understanding of safety practices.

    • Willingness to learn use of equipment and tools.

    • Providing efficient customer service.

    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.


    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in street maintenance or a related field. A valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License is required, along with demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment. Successful completion of the City’s internal assessment and any required coursework is also necessary.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
