    Job Summary:

    The Academic Support Advisor provides direct academic guidance and writing support to undergraduate students through scheduled appointments, drop-in sessions, and campus outreach events. Working under general supervision, the advisor uses established methods to assist students in developing their writing skills, connecting with campus resources, and participating in structured academic support initiatives. The role supports daily center operations, collaborates with peer educators, and helps facilitate workshops and presentations using pre-defined content. This position contributes to a welcoming, student-centered environment and promotes academic success through consistent, guided support.


    Responsibilities:


    Academic Guidance and Coaching
    • Establishes supportive working relationships with undergraduate students to assist them in developing their academic writing skills. Uses established techniques to provide one-on-one and group academic support during scheduled appointments and drop-in sessions.
    • Provides direct services to students on a daily basis in the center, addressing immediate academic support needs with a focus on writing development and resource connection.
    • Utilizes campus referral processes to introduce students to appropriate academic and student support services when additional or specialized help is needed.
    • Participates in targeted academic support campaigns and outreach initiatives by following pre-determined plans and messaging developed by the director. Provides guidance to students during these initiatives under general supervision.
    • Collaborates with student assistants serving as peer educators by supporting their work with students. Offers logistical guidance and shares resources as needed to assist in effective service delivery. Provides feedback to the director to ensure student assistant efforts align with center goals.
    • Contributes to the day-to-day operations of the center by assisting with maintaining supplies, welcoming students, and ensuring smooth execution of scheduled services and programming, following established procedures and protocols.

    Campus Partnerships and Events
    • Represents the center at campus-wide student engagement events such as orientation, Weeks of Welcome, Choose CSUSB, and other events, providing information and answering questions about academic writing support services.
    • Works with the director to help deliver workshops and small group presentations to student audiences. Prepares and organizes materials and ensures events follow structured formats.
    • Supports campus outreach by following established guidelines to promote services, respond to student inquiries, and distribute information in a consistent and inclusive manner.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job-related education may be substituted for the required experience.
    • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
    • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management; research and interviewing techniques; principles of individual and group behavior; the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned; and the basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned. Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; present clear and concise information orally and in written reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.

    • Ability to interpret, apply, and explain program rules and regulations.
    • Take initiative and exercise resourcefulness in advising practice.
    • Ability to translate student development, leadership theory, and research into practice.
    • Experience fostering and maintaining effective relationships and ability to work collaboratively across organizational lines and coordinate the efforts of multiple areas is essential.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and in large groups.
    • Public speaking and ability to reason logically analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
    • Remains current regarding trends and developments in higher education, student development theory, high-impact practices related to advising, transition and student success. Will remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, the development of professional contacts with colleagues, attendance at professional development courses/conferences, and trainings, as directed, by the Director.
    • Works both independently and collaboratively to plan events, conduct presentations, host workshops, participate in orientation and more.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.


    Compensation and Benefits:

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,482 per month

    Classification Salary Range: $4,482 - $6,342 per month

    The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

    The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year.     Position Information:

    Full-time Non-Exempt Probationary

    Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Conditions of Employment

    Background Check

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
