INAPPROPRIATE QUESTIONS PRECEDING INTERVIEW« Back to Questions List

As a finalist for a department head position waiting to meet with the City Manager, his executive secretary asked me questions about my status as a mother (how many children do you have? Do you have a nanny? Etc) which I felt were inappropriate.  The CM never broached these topics during my interview,  but I did not get a job offer and now wonder if the secretary was mining for information which effected the CM’s appointment choice.  Do I have any recourse?

It’s an old tactic. What they’re loking to see is how you act towards people who appear to have no role in whether you get the job or someone else gets it. I use it myself. Others may steer the questions but I don’t. I allow the receptionist (in my case) to attempt to engage the person. I’m not interested in the answers as much as I’m interested in the attitude. You’d be surprised at how many applicants don’t engage her at all…a fatal mistake.

Not sure if you have a recourse as you would need to prove the CM got the information and the information affected his decision. A good employment law attorney would be able to answer that question. As far as answering the questions, I would politely decline stating I was preparing myself for the interview and there would be plenty of time to chat after I was hired for the position.

Ask the relevance of the question to the job you are interviewing for.
