Credit problems, particularly severe or recurring, may reflect on a person’s capacity to manage money, their organizational skills or impulse control. Weaknesses in these areas may adversely affect an employee’s ability to handle public funds and other assets. An employee who is struggling with sizeable or chronic debt might be more likely to compromise his judgment or self-restraint as it relates to possible corruption opportunities. Clearly, many people who have credit problems handle money adeptly in the workplace and personal debt has no bearing on their honesty or integrity; however, employers have a fiduciary duty to evaluate each situation and its potential risk.
