WILL ASKING TO MEET WITH THE CITY MANAGER DIRECTLY BE FROWNED UPON?« Back to Questions List

Following a rigorous testing process, I have been offered a division level position by a city department head.  I would like to meet privately with the City Manager to hear from her first hand about her vision for the City as well as her leadership and management style.  How might such a request be viewed?

If care is taken to advise the department head of your wish, and the basis for it, such a request may be seen as part of a strong candidate’s due diligence and research prior to making an important career decision. The department head will hopefully appreciate that you understand the nature of top down leadership, and how a City Manager’s management style can affect organizational culture and the administration of operating departments under her command.
