{"id":1137,"date":"2013-07-14T14:56:53","date_gmt":"2013-07-14T21:56:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=1137"},"modified":"2013-07-16T15:54:19","modified_gmt":"2013-07-16T22:54:19","slug":"tethered-to-a-digital-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/public-sector-trends\/tethered-to-a-digital-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Tethered to a Digital Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/digital-government.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1140\" alt=\"digital government \" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/digital-government.jpg\" width=\"392\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/digital-government.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/digital-government-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/digital-government-480x300.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/a>There are many ways to serve the public.\u00a0 From the dedication of our public safety folks in Fire and Police, to the unsung heroes of the sewers who make all of our lives a little bit easier.<\/p>\n<p>One thing all of them have in common is the Digital Tether or at least that is what I call my cell phone.\u00a0 Gone are the days of it can wait until Monday, or it will be there when I get back!\u00a0 For those dedicated enough to manage the digital intrusion into their personal lives the cell phone can be the greatest advancement for active public service we have at our disposal.<\/p>\n<p>Many simply shut it off and drop it in a drawer at the end of the day.\u00a0 However, the level of respect one can garnish from a citizen who needs an answer or has just been the victim of illegal dumping is immeasurable.\u00a0 Recently (and it happens often) we received an email from a citizen to let us know someone had dumped some furniture in the entrance to a city park.\u00a0 It happened overnight on a Friday and would have been a mess which would wait until the next week, however, our email system works in conjunction with our cell system.<\/p>\n<p>The customer who sent the email to the head of the department was astonished to not only get an email response on a Saturday morning indicating he had received the email but to find staff across the street cleaning it up within an hour of the message.\u00a0 Does this happen all the time?\u00a0 No, but when it does it proves to a grateful public their concerns really are our concerns.\u00a0 More importantly, their civil servants are actually <i>serving<\/i> them.<\/p>\n<p>An argument can be made to say the time is ours as the employee to be free of the job, but, as a visual reminder of what service to a community looks like, we have obligations far exceeding the punching of a clock.\u00a0 Once someone knows you work for <i>their<\/i> city they see us in a different light and respect us for willingly placing the Digital Tether on our backs so they can enjoy their community.\u00a0 \u00a0So, clip it in, turn it on, and embrace service at a higher level!\u00a0 Just don\u2019t do it while driving without a hands free Digital Tether.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are many ways to serve the public.\u00a0 From the dedication of our public safety folks in Fire and Police, to the unsung heroes of the sewers who make all of our lives a little bit easier. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member.
