{"id":1443,"date":"2013-08-16T17:18:33","date_gmt":"2013-08-17T00:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=1443"},"modified":"2014-04-22T19:15:02","modified_gmt":"2014-04-23T02:15:02","slug":"managing-through-outsourcing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/public-sector-trends\/managing-through-outsourcing\/","title":{"rendered":"Managing Through Outsourcing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/outsourcing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/outsourcing.jpg\" alt=\"outsourcing\" width=\"345\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/outsourcing.jpg 575w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/outsourcing-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/outsourcing-480x436.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><\/a>In times such as these, many people still have a feeling that public sector employees are overpaid, underworked, and (frankly) untouchable.\u00a0 The reality of public service is they are not.\u00a0 Coming from the private sector 12 years ago to the public arena, I vowed never to forget where I came from.\u00a0 I even keep an old uniform shirt from my life as a garbage sorter on the back of my office door.\u00a0 It calls to me some days and reminds me everyone has value and potential.<\/p>\n<p>When I came to work for the City, I thought I had it made.\u00a0 I shared the opinion of the uniformed about light workdays, high pay, and the promise of a forever job.\u00a0 Boy was I wrong!\u00a0 The days were filled with hours that never seemed to end and work from unyielding sources.\u00a0 Being the fifth largest city in California there are many expectations to a city employee.\u00a0 When the bubble burst, the whole game changed.<\/p>\n<p>I am sure you in public sector work know what I mean.\u00a0 More with less became the battle cry, and should have been hung from the city hall flagstaff as a standard for all to see.\u00a0 There too opened a new door of possibility&#8230;. THE OUTSOURCE.\u00a0 It was subtle at first but soon became center stage for all to see.\u00a0 It started, with our very tiny divisions and has continued on to what is arguably \u201ccore services.\u201d\u00a0 When a game changer comes along like a sacred cow that no one would ever think to touch, you become entangled in a conflict, which can consume a manger.<\/p>\n<p>The hardest thing to do is to stay true to yourself, your staff, and to your administration, all while balancing the tightrope of customer comments and complaints.\u00a0 It is possible to manage through these though times and even to be present at the end of what some would call a legacy.\u00a0 However, when confronted by such a task it can tear at the heart of you.\u00a0 As a manager in the midst of the turmoil, I would suggest a piece of advice (I wish I had taken) stay neutral when you can.\u00a0 You may feel as if this position is in itself wishy washy, but it is the hardest place to be and only the strongest can maintain the stance.\u00a0 Everyone <i>is<\/i> watching you.<\/p>\n<p>A book I recently read called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Invisible-Spotlight-Managers-Cant\/dp\/1460926013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>Invisible Spotlight \u2013 Why Managers can\u2019t hide<\/i><\/a> (Katz, Wasserman, 2011) puts the concept into perspective.\u00a0 The authors say that we as managers are the subject of \u201cthe dinner table\u201d whether we like it or not.\u00a0\u00a0 No matter what your management role the challenges are potential growth moments with opportunities to know yourself better.\u00a0 Remember to look around and take note as you see others who are stepping up through these tough times.\u00a0 Amazing people are a motivator.\u00a0 Surround yourself with them and leadership is less about direction and becomes more about service to those who do amazing things right before your own eyes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In times such as these, many people still have a feeling that public sector employees are overpaid, underworked, and (frankly) untouchable.\u00a0 The reality of public service is they are not.\u00a0 Coming from the private sector 12 years ago to the public arena, I vowed never to forget where I came from.\u00a0 I even keep an [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":31,"featured_media":1444,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","_cbd_carousel_blocks":"[]","_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,4],"tags":[10,7],"class_list":["post-1443","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-about-gov","category-public-sector-trends","tag-government-administration","tag-government-work"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 - Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member.
