\"Conference\"<\/a>2013 is the year of the networker.\u00a0 Stop groaning.\u00a0 I know what\u2019s best.\u00a0 Once we get that general premise down, we\u2019re good to go.\u00a0 What\u2019s that, you say?\u00a0 You don\u2019t like networking?\u00a0 While I\u2019m sure you\u2019re a marvelously unique individual, you are hardly alone in that sentiment.<\/p>\n

Why do so many of us hate networking?\u00a0 Networking has a reputation as a manipulative, self-serving, sleazy endeavor involving hard-sells and soft cheese.\u00a0 However\u00a0real<\/em>\u00a0networking builds lasting, mutually beneficial relationships.\u00a0 Quality networking is about forging meaningful connections one person at a time.\u00a0 Nothing cheesy about it.<\/p>\n

People who hate networking simultaneously believe they are bad networkers.\u00a0 That is because they have not yet read this article!\u00a0 Luckily, you can finally accomplish your\u00a0Big Goal<\/em>\u00a0through the immediate application of the following ten stellar tips.<\/p>\n

  1. Play Your Strengths<\/em><\/strong>Don\u2019t fight against your naturally loveable disposition.\u00a0 Inauthentic behavior makes networking backfire, causing you to blow out faster than a sixteen-wheeler on hot summer asphalt.\u00a0 Transform presumed networking liabilities into assets.\u00a0 Don\u2019t like to blab, prefer to soak it in?\u00a0 Ask thoughtful questions and really listen.\u00a0 Your popularity will soar and you never need to scrounge around for conversation starters again.<\/li>\n
  2. Establish Goals<\/em><\/strong>Why are you attending an event? Set clear, measurable goals such as meeting two new people. Be realistic. The best goals are challenging yet achievable.\u00a0 What will make the event a success for you?<\/li>\n
  3. Volunteer<\/em><\/strong>Arrange in advance to help out. Many networking-haters are most comfortable when in a designated, structured role. Working the event provides you with a specific reason to engage with others, rather than poking around for small talk.<\/li>\n
  4. Arrive early<\/em><\/strong>It is better to enter a room with a few people than one with a crowd packed close together.\u00a0 Gatherings are cozier near the beginning and participants more accessible.<\/li>\n
  5. Be cool<\/em><\/strong>Be positive, helpful, gracious and upbeat.\u00a0 Maintain eye contact and smile.\u00a0 It is impossible to predict who the \u2018right people\u2019 turn out to be, so decide whoever you are facing is the right person for you to be meeting at that moment.<\/li>\n
  6. Get in Line<\/em><\/strong>Lines provide a fine alternative to standing around alone. There are only two people nearby \u2013 the person behind and in front of you. Ask about work, origin of an interesting name, or what brought them to the event. Completing your time in-line provides a built-in closer\u2014exchange contact information and be on your way.<\/li>\n
  7. Write it Down<\/em><\/strong>Note pertinent facts on business cards of new acquaintances. Do not overestimate your future memory capacity.\u00a0 Include:\n

    • Name, with pronunciation hints<\/li>\n
    • Event location and date<\/li>\n
    • Personal facts (family, birthday, interests . . .)<\/li>\n
    • Brief conversation summary<\/li>\n

    • Do Less<\/em><\/strong>Prioritize your time, manage your energy.\u00a0 Shining bright at one event is smarter than straggling into every networking opportunity crossing your path.\u00a0 Grant yourself mini-recharge breaks at programmes.\u00a0 Head outside for a breather, step away to refresh, decompress on a brisk walk, or check messages.\u00a0 Let go of what you\u00a0should<\/em>\u00a0do; free yourself up to what appeals.\u00a0 You will be more appealing to others in the process.<\/li>\n
    • End Gracefully<\/em><\/strong>Never allow a conversation to fizzle out past its prime. You also want to avoid causing others to feel trapped talking with you.\u00a0<\/strong>Try:\n

      • Have you met [colleague passing by]?<\/li>\n
      • I\u2019ve enjoyed our conversation! Thank you.<\/li>\n

      • I\u2019m sure you want to talk with others; I won\u2019t hold you up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        If you claim to be headed somewhere,\u00a0really go<\/em>.<\/li>\n

      • Follow up<\/em><\/strong>The time you invest in networking goes swirling down the proverbial drain without follow up.\u00a0 Write a personal note within 48 hours, while you still remember each other.\u00a0 Be useful \u2013 include an article link, provide relevant information, or connect your new acquaintance with a valuable resource.\u00a0 Want to really stand out? Mail a handwritten note.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
