{"id":1702,"date":"2013-10-22T19:52:51","date_gmt":"2013-10-23T02:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=1702"},"modified":"2013-10-22T20:16:54","modified_gmt":"2013-10-23T03:16:54","slug":"public-sector-hr-professionals-can-get-management-listen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/resources\/public-sector-hr-professionals-can-get-management-listen\/","title":{"rendered":"How Public Sector HR Professionals Can Get Management to Listen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/resources\/public-sector-hr-professionals-can-get-management-listen\/attachment\/hr-management\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1705\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1705\" alt=\"HR.management\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/HR.management.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/HR.management.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/HR.management-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a>For years the human resources (HR) professional has been taking about becoming a strategic partner with management.\u00a0 HR professionals say they want to \u201chave a seat at the table,\u201d \u201cto be a strategic business partner,\u201d and \u201cto add value\u201d to the organization.\u00a0 Yet, many of the top government officials that I work with don\u2019t see HR as their first stop in making organizational change.\u00a0 I also hear HR professionals lamenting the fact that management doesn\u2019t include them.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the transition to a consultative position within the organization takes time.\u00a0 If public sector HR professionals can remember a few key ideas, they\u2019ll be able to make the transition more quickly and confidently.\u00a0 When HR professionals have an opportunity to work with top management, the HR professional should:<\/p>\n<p><b>Listen to their hot buttons.<\/b>\u00a0 If HR is always thinking about HR, they are missing the boat.\u00a0 Try tuning into the key issues that the top brass face.\u00a0 What are they most worried about?\u00a0 What is their biggest challenge?\u00a0 What are they complaining about? HR will only be effective if they deliver services that meet the critical needs of the organization\u2019s leaders.\u00a0 You can only do that if you pay attention to their hot buttons.<\/p>\n<p><b>Present your ideas in value-added terms. <\/b>\u00a0Often, HR presents new ideas and solutions that reflect what HR or the employees want.\u00a0 The next time you offer up a new idea, ask yourself, \u201chow will this make the agency better?\u201d\u00a0 If the HR solution does not add value and contribute to the organization\u2019s strategic goals, rework it.<\/p>\n<p><b>Talk their language.<\/b>\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know the lingo of your industry, you\u2019re doomed.\u00a0 Remember, you might be an HR professional, but you don\u2019t work in the HR industry.\u00a0 You work in the public sector.\u00a0 If you aren\u2019t aware of what\u2019s going on with your City Council, Board of Commissioners, or other governing body, top management has no reason to listen to you.<\/p>\n<p><b>See yourself as a peer to management<\/b>. If you see yourself as a lower level employee, others will see you that way too.\u00a0 Even though you may be geographically south on the organization chart, you cannot think less of yourself and expect managers to see your contribution as valuable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Say it like it is.<\/b>\u00a0 Part of being a peer to management means being frank and honest with your feedback.\u00a0 This is not about alienating others. However, respect is built by telling it like it is.\u00a0 There are too many HR professionals who spend their time protecting their job by avoiding being honest about what they know is really going on.<\/p>\n<p><b>Continually learn.<\/b>\u00a0 Those who are most respected are those who continually hone their craft.\u00a0 We all know colleagues who are doing their job using the same strategies year after year, decade after decade.\u00a0 Eventually, they have nothing new to offer to the organization; yet, management\u2019s challenges change daily.
