{"id":1710,"date":"2013-10-22T20:02:48","date_gmt":"2013-10-23T03:02:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=1710"},"modified":"2013-10-22T20:02:49","modified_gmt":"2013-10-23T03:02:49","slug":"3-strategies-engage-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/resources\/3-strategies-engage-employees\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Strategies to Engage Employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/resources\/3-strategies-engage-employees\/attachment\/engage-government-employees\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1711\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1711\" alt=\"engage.government.employees\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/engage.government.employees.jpg\" width=\"382\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/engage.government.employees.jpg 424w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/engage.government.employees-282x300.jpg 282w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/a>Working in the public sector today is challenging.\u00a0 Fiscal pressures, political winds, and shifting priorities can make the most devoted public servant question their commitment.\u00a0 Yet, engaging employees is at the top of the agenda for most public sector human resources professionals.<\/p>\n<p>So how do we help employees bring passion and energy to work, even if it&#8217;s one of those days (or weeks) when they just don&#8217;t feel like working?&#8221; \u00a0A look into current brain research may provide an answer.<\/p>\n<p>Neuroscience has shown that how employees are treated at work results in a chemical reaction in the brain. \u00a0If a manager shows interest in employees, supports them, and praises them genuinely, the manager is essentially &#8220;squirting&#8221; serotonin into the employee&#8217;s brain.\u00a0 Serotonin is the chemical that makes us feel good.\u00a0 It opens our minds to new ideas and creates a desire to support others. Serotonin leads to enhanced levels of motivation.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, a manager can inadvertently &#8220;squirt&#8221; the chemical cortisol into an employee&#8217;s brain by treating the employee unfairly or by diminishing the efforts of the employee.\u00a0 In turn, the cortisol leads the employee to shut down any willingness to help or to be open to new ideas. It&#8217;s a demotivator.<\/p>\n<p>This brain research leads us to ask, &#8220;What can we do to consistently &#8220;squirt&#8221; motivation into an employee?\u00a0 Here are a few thoughts:<\/p>\n<p><b>Add some fun and variety into the daily routine.<\/b>\u00a0 When was the last time you and your staff laughed and played together? Throw around a ball, start an American Idol pool, begin each staff meeting with a &#8220;fun fact.&#8221;\u00a0 Anything that breaks the monotony will squirt a little serotonin around.<\/p>\n<p><b>Provide employees with input and choices.<\/b>\u00a0 The more we feel we can control our world, the more satisfied we are.\u00a0 As a manager, what can you let go of?\u00a0 How can you give a little more independence to your staff? When they feel in control, they&#8217;ll be more motivated to perform.<\/p>\n<p><b>Develop goals and challenges for all employees.<\/b>\u00a0 No matter the job, employees should know what they are working to achieve and what they need to do to get there. A clear path is a certain way to squirt some serotonin into the work environment.<\/p>\n<p>As a manager, it&#8217;s important to know that just a little &#8220;squirt&#8221; can make a difference in another person&#8217;s life.
