{"id":175,"date":"2013-02-01T15:12:53","date_gmt":"2013-02-01T23:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=175"},"modified":"2014-04-22T20:30:43","modified_gmt":"2014-04-23T03:30:43","slug":"employee-wellness-programs-are-a-good-investment-in-tough-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/public-sector-trends\/employee-wellness-programs-are-a-good-investment-in-tough-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Employee Wellness Programs are a Good Investment In Tough Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/public-sector-trends\/employee-wellness-programs-are-a-good-investment-in-tough-times\/attachment\/government_health_care_employment_issues\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-176\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_health_care_employment_issues.jpg\" alt=\"government_health_care_employment_issues\" width=\"310\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_health_care_employment_issues.jpg 693w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_health_care_employment_issues-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_health_care_employment_issues-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_health_care_employment_issues-480x480.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a>Times are tough.\u00a0 As a result, many state and local governments throughout the country are looking for ways to tighten the purse strings.\u00a0 An obvious strategy is to cut expenses, eliminating non-essential programs and services in order to balance budgets.\u00a0 While employee wellness programs may technically fall under the umbrella of non-essential programs and services, are they wise to cut?\u00a0 Evidence suggests not.<\/p>\n<p>The logic is simple:\u00a0 A healthy employee is a more productive employee.\u00a0 Healthy employees take fewer sick days, and, in general, cost employers less in insurance expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits go deeper than dollars.\u00a0 Employers that offer wellness programs tend to generate a higher morale in the workplace, and find a greater sense of loyalty from their employees \u2013 all directly, and indirectly, contributing to greater overall productivity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Can We Afford It \u2013 Especially Now?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cutting a wellness program may save money in the short run, but spending money on a wellness program saves money in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>A city\u2019s investment in its wellness program is even more important during fiscally challenging periods than during fiscally robust periods, according to Chester C. Christie, Human Resources Director for the City of Columbus, Ohio, which sponsors a program called Healthy Columbus for its employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fitness\/wellness-focused workplace culture and, ultimately, a healthy workforce equates to a more productive workforce.\u00a0 A more productive workforce leads to increased efficiencies and more cost-effective service delivery,\u201d says Christie. \u201cBoth support cost containment efforts and lead to fiscally prudent management and excellent stewardship of taxpayer resources.\u00a0 This is especially important in the public sector environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 10,000 state employees are eligible to participate in the State of Rhode Island\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellness.ri.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Rewards for Wellness Program<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0currently in its fifth year, says Susan Rodriguez, Deputy Personnel Administrator for the State of Rhode Island.\u00a0 Through the program, employees can earn up to $500 in credits towards their health care premiums.<\/p>\n<p>One of the focuses of the program is encouraging primary care.\u00a0 \u201cSince the inception of the program, we have seen an increase in preventive care visits from 53% of employees to 61.4%.\u00a0 Our emergency room utilization rate has dropped from 226 visits per 1,000 members to 175 visits per 1,000 members.\u00a0 Employees not engaged in the Rewards for Wellness program cost, on average, 1.5 times more than those that are engaged (defined as participating in three or more of the program\u2019s activities).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Aggregate Benefits = A Classic \u201cWin-Win\u201d Scenario<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The cost of one employee\u2019s health issues \u2013 related to cardiovascular disease, for example \u2013 may not amount to much, but if one were to aggregate that cost across all employees, the cost to an employer can be staggering, according to Holt Vaughan, Director, myHealthCheck.<\/p>\n<p>MyHealthCheck is an outcomes-based approach that provides financial incentives for employees who improve their overall health.\u00a0 Employees are given an initial health assessment based on a proprietary algorithm, resulting in a score from 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest).\u00a0\u00a0 The score takes into account six key risk factors: blood pressure, body fat percentage, LDL\/HDL cholesterol, glucose, triglycerides, and nicotine.<\/p>\n<p>At participating companies\/organizations, the initial health assessment determines employees\u2019 contributions to their health insurance premiums.
