Here are four kinds of goals that you might consider when setting annual performance goals.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Essence of the Job Goals<\/span> \u2013 These are the goals that clearly describe tasks that are required on the job.\u00a0 For example, an accountant might have a goal to prepare and submit monthly financial statements.\u00a0 A librarian might have a goal to catalogue and reshelf returned books within 12 hours.\u00a0 A mail clerk might have a goal that requires her to deliver all mail daily to all work sites.\u00a0 Essence of the job goals make expectations clearer than they are listed on the job description.\u00a0 These goals personalize the job to the position and to the individual employee.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Project Goals <\/span>\u2013 Project goals are those activities that the employee will pursue with a beginning and an end and may be above and beyond the employee\u2019s routine duties.\u00a0 Project goals can be related to improving systems, developing new products, creating new programs, or anything else that you can think of.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Professional Development Goals<\/span> \u2013 Professional development goals specify what the employee will learn for the coming year.\u00a0 While attending a class to learn something new is noble, I challenge you to find new ways to help employees develop their skills while clearly linking the goal to the organization\u2019s needs.\u00a0 For example, \u201ccross training in a new work area at least one day per week\u201d is a professional development goal. A better goal would be to cross train in the accounting department at least once per week and be able to reconcile bank statements by October 31. Or, \u201cattend a training class on PowerPoint and develop a new slide show to be used in new employee orientation\u201d would be more challenging than just attending the class.\u00a0 Make sure the professional development goals not only develop the employee, but also help your organization.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Performance Improvement Goals<\/span> \u2013 Performance improvement goals should be saved for those times when you want to emphasize clearly that an employee\u2019s behavior must change.\u00a0 Performance improvement goals include things like, \u201carrive to work ready to serve customers at 8 a.m. every day\u201d or \u201climit the number of customer complaints you receive to three per quarter.\u201d\u00a0 Obviously, not all employees would need these kinds of goals.\u00a0 However, they can be helpful in documenting your performance expectations in a clear and measurable way.<\/p>\n<p>Now, go out there and set some goals!\u00a0 Make your expectations clear and get a great start to the New Year!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The end of one year provides us with a wonderful opportunity to start fresh in the New Year.\u00a0 In many public agencies a fresh start means new annual goals.\u00a0 Many managers see goal setting as the opportunity to list the classes the employee will attend for the coming year.\u00a0 While learning goals are appropriate, the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":59,"featured_media":1810,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","_cbd_carousel_blocks":"[]","_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[69,61],"tags":[33,605],"class_list":["post-1808","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hr-tips","category-resources","tag-management-advice","tag-marnie-e-green"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
