Laziness; fear of success; a failure to prioritize, perhaps. I just know that about 2% of those who take a business card, or say they will follow up\u2026 actually do.<\/p>\n<p>Want to stand out among all your competition \u2013 no matter what you hope to achieve? Follow up.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>2.\u00a0 Personalize Everything<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Think those generic connection requests on LinkedIn and auto-DMs on Twitter will get you noticed in a positive way? Think that generic cover letter and resume will get you an interview?<\/p>\n<p>Wrong. In today\u2019s world, every communication you send must be personalized. Period.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>3.\u00a0 Make a To-Do List<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t do to-do lists\u201d is one of the biggest red flags in the professional world. No matter how you keep track \u2013 pen and paper, smartphone, laptop, iPad \u2013 a to-do list is a mandatory element of staying organized and being able to properly prioritize your next activity.<\/p>\n<p>Suggestion: try the \u201cCNN\u201d method of listing tasks, which by default helps you prioritize:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>C = \u201cCritical\u201d<\/li>\n<li>N = \u201cNeed to do\u201d<\/li>\n<li>N = \u201cNice to do\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>4.\u00a0 Find a Mentor (Lots of Mentors!)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of the key traits of crazy-successful careerists comes down to one thing: the existence of professional mentors. Perhaps a stable of them, or a \u201cPersonal Board of Advisors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Not sure where to find mentors? LinkedIn Groups are a place to start. Or participate in Twitter chats, which mentor goldmines; #InternPro chat and\/or #jobhuntchat on Twitter, each Monday evening starting at 9pm and 10pm ET, are two of the best.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>5.\u00a0 Read\u2026 Always Read<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Check out the autobiography of any major innovator\u2026 insatiable reading is near the top of everyone\u2019s \u201cmust follow advice\u201d list. Blogs, books, white papers, best practices, rants\u2026 it doesn\u2019t matter what you read. Just read.<\/p>\n<p>And get your brain moving in a direction different than it might be used to going.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>6.\u00a0 Present Yourself as a Problem Solver<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In our current economy, every organization is trying to do more with less. There is just no room for automatons who simply \u201cdo their job\u201d. Every recruiter or boss now seeks innovative thinkers who provide solutions\u2026 or at least ideas that contribute to solutions. They want those who will generate impact.<\/p>\n<p>How to do that?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify a challenge.<\/li>\n<li>Think \u2013 or build a team to think \u2013 of a solution.<\/li>\n<li>Present the solution.<\/li>\n<li>Actively listen to the feedback.<\/li>\n<li>Improve the solution.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>7.\u00a0 Own \u201cIt\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter what \u201cit\u201d is. It could be that big challenge that needs a solution. Or maybe it\u2019s the bathroom that needs cleaning. Or, just maybe it\u2019s a mistake made. No matter what is thrown at you, or to you\u2026 own it.<\/p>\n<p>How do you project this in-demand trait? Take on this mindset: \u201cThis is my job to do. I will do it to the best of my ability. Once done, I will ask for more responsibility.\u201d Not a bad way to go through a career.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>8.\u00a0 Know This: All Anyone Cares About is\u2026 Results<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>My personal favorite, especially when someone says: \u201cBut I worked really hard on that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the real world, it does not matter one little bit how much effort you put into a project. The only thing that matters is\u2026 results. How does your work measure up against milestones? Did you meet the goals of the project? Did you exceed expectations?<\/p>\n<p>If not\u2026 the last thing you want to talk about to a boss, mentor or potential employer is how hard you worked\u2026 to achieve nothing.<\/p>\n<p>As you build your career, be the 5% who will follow this career-changing advice. And don\u2019t be afraid to pass it along to others.
