{"id":1970,"date":"2014-01-18T13:51:24","date_gmt":"2014-01-18T21:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=1970"},"modified":"2014-01-18T20:55:04","modified_gmt":"2014-01-19T04:55:04","slug":"trash-worthy-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/public-sector-trends\/trash-worthy-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Trash Worthy Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/public-sector-trends\/trash-worthy-technology\/attachment\/technology-trash\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1973\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1973\" alt=\"technology.trash\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/technology.trash_.jpg\" width=\"315\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/technology.trash_.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/technology.trash_-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a>I recently attended a conference on waste to energy in southern California.\u00a0 I was amazed at the amount of municipal employees who could see the writing on the wall with regard to the next generation of technology coming online.\u00a0 The ability to manage the last 10 to 20% of a waste stream into an energy source is a working model in Europe but seems all but impossible to \u201csell\u201d here.\u00a0 The overall complaint was one of two issues which seem to work against forward thinkers and in tandem like a one-two punch.\u00a0 The issues were political will and\/or project financing.\u00a0 Many municipalities view the need to expand in environmental areas with the energy of a zealot.\u00a0 They become so focused and driven to a goal they fail to nurture a stable relationship with their elects.\u00a0 In other cases they build a great partnership with the elected official only to get to the zenith of the project during a changing of the guard.\u00a0 And finally there\u2019s the financing, everyone knows the challenges we face in the bond markets today.\u00a0 The question becomes how to sell a project to a rate payer which will ultimately benefit them while dissuading the main stream media\u2019s portrayal of the \u201c$600 toilet seat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I left the conference I came away with the sense of \u201cwell, what are you going to do?\u201d\u00a0 Some have had success but have the grey hair to prove it.\u00a0 The best practice for developing these projects into real solutions is a mixed approach of private\/public funding and character development of champions within your jurisdiction willing to fight the good fights, which also possess the political savvy to sway new advocates on projects which benefit their prodigy.\u00a0 Development of a clearinghouse of people who are capable and willing to help identify the pitfalls prior to one running up on them would be a great resource.\u00a0 In most cases the use of organizations such as SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America), or APWA (American Public Works Association) for their expertise, experience, and contacts may ultimately prove to be just such a clearinghouse.\u00a0 However, the best way is to communicate with others in your field so decisions and courses of action don\u2019t end up being made in a vacuum. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member.
