{"id":2056,"date":"2014-01-19T16:03:34","date_gmt":"2014-01-20T00:03:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=2056"},"modified":"2014-04-22T12:46:21","modified_gmt":"2014-04-22T19:46:21","slug":"interviewing-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/interviewing\/interviewing-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Interviewing the Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/interviewing\/interviewing-job\/attachment\/interview-mardee\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2058\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2058\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/interview.mardee.jpg\" alt=\"interview.mardee\" width=\"315\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/interview.mardee.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/interview.mardee-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a>While most people consider the job interview process a way for an employer to find the best candidate to fill a job vacancy, the interview is also a tool that job seekers can use to determine whether the hiring organization is right for them.\u00a0 Sure, the adage that \u201cbeggars can\u2019t be choosers\u201d certainly has its place in today\u2019s competitive job search environment, but making the wrong move can boomerang you right back into job search mode.\u00a0 Asking the right questions during the interview process can help.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Job Title \u2026 and Beyond<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>To get a feel for whether a job may or may not be right for you, it\u2019s wise to look beyond the job title itself.\u00a0 A job as a \u201chuman resources professional\u201d in a smaller city may require you to wear more hats than the same job in a larger city.\u00a0 While a job description that details the responsibilities of the position is a good place to start, an interview can provide a great opportunity to clarify what the job might actually entail on a day-to-day basis.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the phase of your career, opportunities for advancement may or may not be an important consideration.\u00a0 Will an entry level job in a larger city or state government agency offer more opportunities for career advancement than a similar job in a smaller municipality?<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of your \u201cbig-fish-in-a-small-pond\u201d versus \u201csmall-fish-in-a-big-pond\u201d preference, learning as much as you can about the potential employer is a wise strategy<i>. <\/i>Are people and\/or businesses attracted to this area, or leaving for perceived greener pastures and\/or better economic opportunities?\u00a0\u00a0 Your job security \u2013 and opportunities \u2013 could very well depend on the strength of the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>Job seekers in the public sphere have an advantage here; most state and local government entities have websites that provide a glimpse into the current goings on in local politics, economies, and other news.\u00a0 Biographies of elected and appointed officials are often typical fare on official state, city, and agency websites. \u00a0In addition, social media \u2013 Facebook and Twitter, for example \u2013 can often paint a vivid picture of what\u2019s going on in government.\u00a0 It pays to do the research ahead of time so that you can ask educated questions when the interviewer turns the tables and asks if you have any questions.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Explore the Workplace Culture<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ingrid Goldbloom Bloch, a career strategist\/coach and principal of Boston-based Mosaic Careers,\u00a0recommends that job seekers do as much \u201cback-door\u201d research as possible to get a sense of the workplace culture.\u00a0 \u201cSo much about the company or organization depends on the manager and other team members you would be working with at this job,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Bloch suggests that candidates learn as much as they can about the potential employer and key leaders within the organization \u2013 before heading to the interview.\u00a0 Looking at the LinkedIn profiles of the people that would be in your sphere if you were to get the job allows for a personal connection in the interview <i>(\u201cOh, I see you attended the University of Wisconsin \u2026 so did I!\u201d\u00a0 \u2026 \u201cYou worked at the City of Springfield; my husband grew up there!\u201d)<\/i>.\u00a0 As long as someone\u2019s profile is set to public access, it is not stalking; rather, it\u2019s doing your homework!<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Ask Questions \u2013 and Look Further than the Answers<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Bear in mind, when you are the interview candidate, there is a right time and a wrong time to ask questions.\u00a0 Be respectful of interview protocol, and let the interviewer lead the conversation.\u00a0 But when given the opportunity, take it!\u00a0 You\u2019ll never know the answers unless you ask the right questions.\u00a0 And asking the right questions can help you stand out among the other interview candidates competing for the same position.<\/p>\n<p>In additions to questions about the potential employer itself, questions about management style and delegation of responsibilities can also help you get a feel for whether the position is a good match for you.\u00a0 Other questions that Bloch recommends asking in the interview include \u201cHow do you like to manage your employees?\u201d and \u201cWhat types of problems would I be asked to solve on the first three to six months on the job?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The interview process itself can provide insight into how an organization works, and how co-workers interact.\u00a0 How well does the interviewer know the answers to questions about the organization?\u00a0 Are expectations clearly stated \u2013 i.e., does the interviewer give you a tentative timeline for hearing back from them \u2013 and do they follow through on their word?\u00a0 Or are there long gaps of communication, punctuated by excuses?<\/p>\n<p>Fairy tale jobs aside, career utopia is rare.
