{"id":208,"date":"2013-02-01T16:05:04","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T00:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=208"},"modified":"2013-02-05T22:34:07","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T06:34:07","slug":"your-professional-brand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/your-professional-brand\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Professional Brand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?attachment_id=209\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-209\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-209\" alt=\"government_employment_building\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_employment_building.jpg\" width=\"359\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_employment_building.jpg 598w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_employment_building-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/government_employment_building-480x644.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a>As governments begin to hire again it is imperative for those seeking employment to be better positioned as a powerful professional brand.\u00a0 Everything about you should demonstrate that as a candidate for employment you are THE protagonist for high performance and thus, make it easy for decision-makers to hire you.<\/p>\n<p>In essence, your professional brand is your professional reputation: are you someone who is constantly improving and an exemplary performer achieving unprecedented results, or not?\u00a0 By the way, saying you\u2019re a hard worker in a job interview does not distinguish you from anyone else and leaves absolutely no impression on those making the hiring decision.\u00a0 Ladies and gentlemen, now is the time to be bold!<\/p>\n<p>A cautionary tale when it comes to \u201cbest practices\u201d in building your professional brand.\u00a0 Be a skeptic; a combination of so-called best practices doesn\u2019t guarantee a strong brand.\u00a0 Instead, focus on \u201cnext practices\u201d in which you build a professional brand that is effective for the times as they are now and as they will be.\u00a0 The old models just won\u2019t work anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four practical actions you can immediately take to strengthen your professional brand:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Leadership Capital<\/strong>:\u00a0 Remember, leadership has little to do with job titles and everything to do with work performance.\u00a0 Sit down right now and write in one page or less, what your leadership brand is and what you\u2019re consciously doing to generate leadership capital (be sure and email it to me and I\u2019ll return it with a few comments).\u00a0 What\u2019s your game plan for being an effective leader?\u00a0 Leading by example, being honest and acting with integrity are the bare minimum and do nothing to distinguish you from other job-seekers.\u00a0 Think bigger.\u00a0 Be the leader who is the flame-starter instead of the flame thrower.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Career Trajectory<\/strong>:\u00a0 Ask yourself what you are actively doing to ensure your career trajectory is still ascending?\u00a0 While dollars for your professional development may have been reduced by your current employer, you own your career so be careful not to fall in the trap assuming it\u2019s your employer\u2019s responsibility to ensure you keep your mind moist and advance your career.\u00a0 Seek out new job assignments (especially those assignments no one else wants), serve on a cross-functional task force, shadow someone in a position you\u2019d like to pursue, and ask to attend a higher-level meeting.\u00a0 Be vigilant in lubricating your career muscles so your career arc is always up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work Outcomes<\/strong>:\u00a0 Most government agencies have a predisposition towards employees completing a series of tasks, assuming the completion of such tasks will generate desired outcomes.\u00a0 Not so fast!\u00a0 If you focus solely on completing tasks without a concentration on achieving results, you may land that new position, but your impact on organizational results may be minimal and boredom will ensue.\u00a0 Alternatively, strive to ensure your work performance is directly linked to achieving desired organizational results.\u00a0 With laser-like precision emphasize your contributions so they directly influence the services and programs your agency is providing its customers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovation<\/strong>: Playing it safe is no longer playing it smart.\u00a0 So how are you keeping your innovation muscles strong?\u00a0 What\u2019s your innovation workout routine?
