We will address each section in detail over the next 4 installments.\u00a0 So, hang on and enjoy\u00a0\u00a0 Part 1 \u2013 The Basics.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of a resume is to give the oral board and others who read it a picture of who you are, what you have done relative to the job and what you stand for.\u00a0 This information is conveyed to the reader\/rater in terms of experience, education, accomplishments and community involvement.\u00a0 Since the reader\/rater will only see your resume for 15 \u2013 30 seconds you must convey your message completely and concisely.\u00a0 \u00a0There is no time for information that is irrelevant or uninteresting.<\/p>\n<p>It is critical for you to recognize what to include in the essential components of a resume.\u00a0 These categories will need to be listed in order of relevance.\u00a0 Since we put a great deal of weight on real life experiences the first topic heading is professional experience.\u00a0 Here you must include paid as well as non-paid employment and the actual job activities you performed.<\/p>\n<p>The second category is education.\u00a0 Please include your formal education, post high school with the most relevant first.\u00a0 Be complete because each educational experience teaches you something.\u00a0 We want to know what you learned and that you can learn in a formal environment. \u00a0The third category is your certifications and qualifications.\u00a0 These show that you have been active and are a life long learner.\u00a0 A concept you will come to know and love.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, what speaks to us about what you stand for are the things you do without the purpose of being hired as a firefighter in mind.\u00a0 These are the activities you are involved in that show you are an upstanding member of the community.\u00a0 This is where you get to show your true mettle.\u00a0 These are typically the things you did before you even thought of being a firefighter.\u00a0 You did them because you had a genuine concern for the betterment of your community.\u00a0 Community involvement or Volunteerism, as it is referred to in government sectors, are usually the words that guides these activities.\u00a0 We want to know you are a good person outside the fire service and you are willing to represent the values and morals the fire service stands for.\u00a0 There is no better way to prove that than by executing these missions with pure intentions.\u00a0 That shows character.<\/p>\n<p>Some other key components that should be included in a resume may be professional recognition or special assignments.<\/p>\n<p>If your resume does include these components than your next step is to have someone who makes hiring decisions review it and provide you feedback.\u00a0 If your resume does not include each of the previously mentioned elements than you will definitely benefit from some professional help.\u00a0 Fire Alumni has been helping entry-level firefighter candidates for over 15 years.\u00a0 We focus on helping you, the candidate to become the best you can be in the hiring process.\u00a0 We have reviewed many resumes and assisted many candidates put their best foot forward.\u00a0 Visit us at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firealumni.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.firealumni.com<\/a> and get the assistance you need.<\/p>\n<p><b>Can you afford to miss an opportunity to step up your game?<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the 1st of a 5-part series on how to create an honest and all-inclusive resume to become a Firefighter. Chief Atlas oversees almost $30 million in Local, State and Federal grants for training, apparatus, equipment and staffing. He is a former member of FEMA US&amp;R, California Task Force 4 and The CCCFPD Technical Rescue Program. Bob is a member of the East Bay Incident Management Team and assigned to the Operations Section. Atlas is also serves on The CCCPFD career development committee and is a Certified Oral Board Rater for the fire district. Bob is responsible for the fire districts fire apparatus committee. He has been coaching entry-level candidates since 1999 and promotional candidates since 2005. Bob is one of three Owners of Fire Alumni a leader in public safety training &amp; education since 2004. Bob holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from The University of Massachusetts and an Associates of Science in Fire Science from Mission College. Chief Atlas has been married for 22 years to his beautiful wife Teresa; they have 3 children and reside in Brentwood, Ca. His philosophy in life is simple... He entered the fire service as a Community Fire Aide for the Milpitas Fire Department in 1996 and completed an internship with the South Santa Clara County Fire Protection District and Cal Fire in 1997. Bob was then employed as an Emergency Medical Technician for American Medical Response. He was hired by The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District in 1999, promoted to Fire Engineer in 2002, Captain in 2005 and Shift Battalion Chief in 2011 and is currently assigned to Battalion 8. Chief Atlas oversees almost $30 million in Local, State and Federal grants for training, apparatus, equipment and staffing. Atlas has instructed at the CCCFPD Fire Academy and other fire academies in the area. He is a California State Fire Marshal certified Fire Officer and Fire Instructor I. He is a former member of FEMA US&amp;R, California Task Force 4 and The CCCFPD Technical Rescue Program. Bob is a member of the East Bay Incident Management Team and assigned to the Operations Section. Atlas is also serves on The CCCPFD career development committee and is a Certified Oral Board Rater for the fire district. Bob is responsible for the fire districts fire apparatus committee. He has been coaching entry-level candidates since 1999 and promotional candidates since 2005. Bob is one of three Owners of Fire Alumni a leader in public safety training &amp; education since 2004. Bob holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from The University of Massachusetts and an Associates of Science in Fire Science from Mission College.
