{"id":2150,"date":"2014-02-15T14:00:06","date_gmt":"2014-02-15T22:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=2150"},"modified":"2014-02-15T14:00:07","modified_gmt":"2014-02-15T22:00:07","slug":"change-agents-become-leaders-local-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/change-agents-become-leaders-local-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Change Agents Become Leaders in Local Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/change-agents-become-leaders-local-government\/attachment\/rudder-and-compass\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2151\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2151\" alt=\"Rudder and compass\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/shuber.change.agents.jpg\" width=\"408\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/shuber.change.agents.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/shuber.change.agents-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/shuber.change.agents-480x319.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I once heard it said that \u201cthe world is a dirty diaper, let someone else change it\u201d, and of course I chuckled because change can, in some ways, have the same effect on people trapped in a room with a dirty diaper.\u00a0 They make the face, followed by squirming in their seats, and ultimately they excuse themselves from the room as fast as humanly possible.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with sense (and small children) knows the situation isn\u2019t getting any better with the passing of time.\u00a0 Being around people who want to change something because it is long overdue and the current reality stinks is refreshing.\u00a0 The energy is infectious and leads those who also possess the change agent mentality to do great things.<\/p>\n<p>When given the chance I like to have as many of these little energizer bunnies of change around me as I can.\u00a0 The hard part is deciding when the change that\u2019s needed is you.\u00a0 Always in the mix and right in the heart of the battle to make it better can weigh on a person, and sometimes even anchor them to ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Recently I had a supervisor who was looking to improve the department with some ideas he had.\u00a0 The ideas were sound and the reasoning was solid, but I scoffed about them and was not receptive to the ideas.\u00a0 The ideas were taken to another person in my organization who worked for me and they began what I call \u201cthe End Run\u201d around me through the use of our budget process.<\/p>\n<p>At first I thought \u201cwhy you little\u201d and then it hit me, your using my playbook for road blocks when the change is part of what we need to get to the next level.\u00a0 Now the questions began to come to me\u2026 How could I respond to the idea that the changes were now being driven by those around me who were closer to the front line and could see them better than I?\u00a0 Was I now the change inhibitor in my organization?\u00a0 Why do I think I have a corner on the change market?<\/p>\n<p>The one that resounded in my ears for a while was; is my pride getting in the way of the growth of the machine I helped create?\u00a0 My Pride? Suddenly I felt small and insignificant not like the man at the helm but the guy with the mop on the poop deck.\u00a0 Then it hit me, you empowered them to see the change they wanted for themselves.\u00a0 You\u2019re not the captain anymore, you\u2019re the admiral.\u00a0 Your work created many captains who all want to see success.\u00a0 If you did it correctly there will be people in their part of the organization who are looking to sit in the driver\u2019s seat as well, and are being groomed for just such a day. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member.
