{"id":2163,"date":"2014-02-15T14:47:45","date_gmt":"2014-02-15T22:47:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=2163"},"modified":"2014-04-22T11:57:10","modified_gmt":"2014-04-22T18:57:10","slug":"state-public-sector-workforce-good-news-bad-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/resources\/hr-tips\/state-public-sector-workforce-good-news-bad-news\/","title":{"rendered":"The State of the Public Sector Workforce: Good News and Bad News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/resources\/hr-tips\/state-public-sector-workforce-good-news-bad-news\/attachment\/marnie-public-sector-trend\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2164\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/marnie.public.sector.trend_.jpg\" alt=\"marnie.public.sector.trend\" width=\"411\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/marnie.public.sector.trend_.jpg 762w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/marnie.public.sector.trend_-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/marnie.public.sector.trend_-480x396.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><\/a>A <a href=\"http:\/\/ipma-hr.org\/hr-resources\/surveys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">recent IPMA-HR member poll<\/a> reported some good news about the state of the public sector workforce.\u00a0 The poll had some bad news as well.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The good news?\u00a0 In the survey 81% of the respondents said that their agency was no longer conducting layoffs.\u00a0 This is a welcomed turnaround from a few years ago when it seemed everyone was cutting back.\u00a0 The survey also found that 54% of respondents are feeling the impact of an improving economy.\u00a0 I can sense this turnaround with my clients too.\u00a0 Public agencies are beginning to think about employee development again.\u00a0 They are starting to focus on the future, instead of hanging on for dear life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">It\u2019s true that many in the public sector are breathing a little easier these days, feeling as if the pressure to cut budgets, reorganize functions, and tighten the belt have passed.\u00a0 But let\u2019s not get too cocky.\u00a0 The IPMA-HR member survey also produced some concerning results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The survey found that only 20% of the respondents indicated that the employees in their agency are full engaged.\u00a0 That leaves a whopping 80% of public sector employees, according to this survey, who are not engaged in the work of serving their communities!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">We know from years of research that workplaces with a high percentage of disengaged employees also experience high levels of turnover, greater use of leave, and more team conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Granted, the sampling in this survey was small with a little over 125 respondents.\u00a0 Still, it begs the question\u2026if things are getting better, are they really improving?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How\u2019s the level of employee engagement in your agency?\u00a0 Email me to share how it\u2019s going in your agency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent IPMA-HR member poll reported some good news about the state of the public sector workforce.\u00a0 The poll had some bad news as well.
