Facebook &#8211; and other Social Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?attachment_id=221\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-221\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-221\" alt=\"job seeker_social media_job search\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/job-seeker_social-media_job-search.jpg\" width=\"340\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/job-seeker_social-media_job-search.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/job-seeker_social-media_job-search-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a>The digital revolution continues to evolve, and the public sector is coming along for the ride \u2013 and, in some cases, paving the way.\u00a0 Over the past several years, social media has taken on a power that even Mark Zuckerberg may not have been able to imagine.<br \/>\nFrom cities to airports, public utilities, school districts, and transit authorities, many public sector organizations have realized that social media provides a highly effective and efficient means to inform, educate, connect, and engage.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Who\u2019s Online and What Are They Doing There?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nNow before you wrinkle your nose and say, \u201cthat\u2019s not for us,\u201d consider this:\u00a0 As of February 2012, 66 percent of online adults use social networking sites, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.\u00a0 Not surprisingly, the 18-29 year old crowd uses social media at a higher rate (86 percent) than other age groups, which are, slowly \u2013 but definitely surely \u2013 catching up.\u00a0 More than one third of Internet users in the 65+ category use social networking sites, with other age groups somewhere in the middle (72 percent in the 30-49 year old age group, and 50 percent in the 50-64 year old age group).<\/p>\n<p>The City of Virginia Beach, Virginia leaves no stone unturned in the area of social media.\u00a0 Its Facebook page is 10,000 \u201clikes\u201d strong \u2013 and that\u2019s just the beginning.\u00a0 In addition to its Facebook page, Virginia Beach also has a Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr account.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t stop there; many individual departments manage their own social media sites as well.\u00a0 The Virginia Beach Public Works Department, for example, has its own Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts, while the Parks and Recreation Department manages a Facebook and Flickr account.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Fairley, Information Services Administrator, says that the City of Virginia Beach aims to be as open and up-front with its residents as possible.\u00a0 \u201cSocial media opens up another layer of communication, allowing us to truly engage the residents of Virginia Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Is There a Downside to Social Media?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nCertainly, public discourse can get heated, especially when it comes to certain topics that can spark \u201ccolorful\u201d discussions.\u00a0 Virginia Beach adheres to a set of policies aimed to keep comments courteous and respectful.\u00a0 In a sense, governments need to be somewhat thick-skinned, Fairley says.\u00a0 In order to become fully cognizant of residents\u2019 likes, dislikes, and wants, you have to allow public discourse, even when that may mean negative feedback.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What\u2019s All the Twitter and Flickring About?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nForgive the man in the car commercial on TV who calls it \u201cMy Face\u201d \u2026 Facebook is the most commonly used social networking sites \u2013 66 percent of adults use Facebook, compared to 20 percent for LinkedIn and 16 percent for Twitter.\u00a0 But Twitter is gaining ground \u2013 and fast.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2012, the Pew Internet and American Life Project reported that \u201cthe proportion of online adults who use Twitter on a typical day has doubled since May 2011 and has quadrupled since late 2010.\u201d<br \/>\nTwitter, still a mystery for many, is a quick and easy way for organizations to communicate with those who sign up to \u201cfollow\u201d them.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the nation\u2019s largest public utility, hosts a Twitter page with over 5,580 followers.\u00a0 It uses its Twitter account to post quick updates on everything from proposed electric rate increases to updates on water main breaks.<\/p>\n<p>It can also be a way to engage.\u00a0 Milwaukee\u2019s Mitchell International Airport, with 3,438 followers, takes on a conversational tone, thanking people who mention the Airport in their tweets, and even responding to questions like, \u201cDoes Milwaukee Airport have a Starbucks?\u201d\u00a0 Of course, it also uses its Twitter and Facebook pages for informational and promotional messages as well.<br \/>\nYouTube and Flickr allow the sharing of videos and photos, respectively.\u00a0 From public service messages to photos of local ceremonies or events, these media provide great ways to share local news and activities.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Social Media Engages<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nBy its very nature, social media is engaging.\u00a0 And with its increasing popularity in all age categories, its prevalence is also growing.\u00a0\u00a0 The public sector has, at its disposal, a powerful, far-reaching, (free!), way to promote, educate, inform, communicate, and engage \u2026.
