{"id":228,"date":"2013-02-01T16:42:32","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T00:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=228"},"modified":"2013-02-05T22:31:01","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T06:31:01","slug":"are-performance-reviews-as-painful-as-seeing-the-dentist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/are-performance-reviews-as-painful-as-seeing-the-dentist\/","title":{"rendered":"Are performance reviews as painful as seeing the dentist?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?attachment_id=229\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-229\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-229\" alt=\"Businessman Crossing Fingers Behind His Back - Isolated\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/employee_job_search.jpg\" width=\"345\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/employee_job_search.jpg 379w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/employee_job_search-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><\/a>Performance evaluations are an uncomfortable experience even in the best of circumstances, but an evaluation that brings \u201croom for improvement\u201d or the news that you are \u201cnot meeting expectations\u201d can suck the oxygen out of the room, and leave you mentally reviewing your savings account balance (meager) and your options (Mom\u2019s couch?).<\/p>\n<p>Instead, take a deep breath and consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I can guarantee that your supervisor isn\u2019t relishing this moment, either.\u00a0 Hopefully, she\u2019s been coaching you on these issues so this evaluation isn\u2019t the first time you have heard about the problem.\u00a0 Still, having to put it in writing and then look you in the eye with the news isn\u2019t any manager\u2019s idea of a good time.<\/li>\n<li>Having these issues day-lighted in the evaluation is a little like going to therapy.\u00a0 Just identifying the issue clears the air and puts you on the path forward to change.<\/li>\n<li>The best response to this evaluation is to remain open-minded, and try to see you\u2019re boss\u2019 perspective.\u00a0 Ask clarifying questions and seek examples so that you make sure you understand where you have stepped off-course.<\/li>\n<li>Fight, fight, fight the urge to be defensive. Defensiveness is a huge red flag \u2013 it not only shows that you are not open to feedback, but it sends the message that you are ultimately not going to modify your behavior and address the problems at hand.<\/li>\n<li>It is honest and real to respond with a statement like, \u201cIt hurts to know I\u2019m not measuring up, but I\u2019m glad you\u2019re telling me and let\u2019s talk about what I can do differently.\u201d \u00a0It is not a great idea to say that you don\u2019t agree, or that the boss misunderstood, or that it\u2019s not your fault.\u00a0 Even if you feel that way, or even if it\u2019s true, these types of defensive statements are not productive and are certainly not going to change your supervisor\u2019s perspective.<\/li>\n<li>Try to leave the evaluation meeting with a specific game plan for how you can meet your manager\u2019s expectations and address the performance issues proactively. This shows that you value the organization and your supervisor\u2019s feedback, and sets the stage for success in the future. It is also a good idea to schedule a follow-up talk in 30 to 60 days to see how you are doing.\u00a0 Again, any steps you can take to show you are committed to learning from the past can only help earn the respect and trust of your manager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This open-minded, not defensive response is the right one in most cases.\u00a0 Of course, there are a few dysfunctional supervisors in every organization, and if you\u2019re unlucky enough to have one, your best course of action may be to look for other employment opportunities.\u00a0 Talk with a trusted mentor or colleague outside the organization to get an objective perspective before you jump to that conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>The less-than-perfect evaluation is not the end of the world.\u00a0 It can be the start of a process to reinvent your image in the organization, and show you are a person that\u2019s learning, growing, and improving over time.\u00a0\u00a0 Who doesn\u2019t want an employee like that?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Performance evaluations are an uncomfortable experience even in the best of circumstances, but an evaluation that brings \u201croom for improvement\u201d or the news that you are \u201cnot meeting expectations\u201d can suck the oxygen out of the room, and leave you mentally reviewing your savings account balance (meager) and your options (Mom\u2019s couch?).
