aligned on the American workplace like the planets in some science fiction movie.\u00a0 However, this does not have to alert us to the doom of the known world as with so many of those movies.\u00a0 Now don\u2019t get me wrong, I love a good \u201cback in my day\u201d story just as much as the next guy (topped off with a \u201csonny\u201d is a true added value); but there are gold mines of information ready to be plucked from those stories which most Gen Y\u2019ers (or millennials) just can\u2019t put down their cell phones long enough to understand.\u00a0 #Imtalkingabout Xers!\u00a0 They get it, and better than that, they know how to communicate on both plains.<\/p>\n<p>Here it comes, the \u201cback in my day\u201d story; when I first started working we used paper and pencils, I know what carbon paper is, we learned to type on a, wait for it, Typewriter!\u00a0 We were the beta group for video games and the products we have today in the workplace we called digital tools.\u00a0 Here is where it gets interesting.\u00a0 We speak both languages.\u00a0 Like the Tibetan Sherpa who can lead you through the mountains, we know what the boomers are talking about because we worked with that technology too.<\/p>\n<p>Boomers are leaving the workplace in droves, as the workplace is slammed with a silver tsunami like none other.\u00a0 I mean have you looked at the openings for a city manager lately.\u00a0 Now there is an underserved area of employment, people just don\u2019t look at that job as something they want to aspire to be.\u00a0 Along with countless management, people from finance to analyst it is getting easier for a great service like careers in government to keep their pages filled with opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most valuable assets of an employee is their ability to lead and help disseminate information to the staff.\u00a0 More than most of the abilities we may have in our toolbox, this is one that is not sold clearly enough.\u00a0 Take for instance a job opportunity where the candidate is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.governing.com\/topics\/mgmt\/gov-how-generation-x-shaping-government.html\" target=\"_blank\">Generation X person<\/a>\u00a0who is applying for a position in local government to eventually take the place of a Boomer who needs to pass on the torch and impart their hard earned wisdom on the next wave of upper middle management.\u00a0 Would you, as the hiring person, want a person who could communicate effectively with the source?\u00a0 I know I would and would welcome the opportunity not\u00a0to\u00a0have to hire again in a couple of months when the two just could not find middle ground.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, maybe it is time we X\u2019ers check the multiple language box on the application.\u00a0 When asked you can say, \u201cI am fluent in Boom and Y!\u201d who knows maybe the answer back from across the table will be \u201cGroovy.\u201d Now wouldn\u2019t that just be Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member.
