Organizational beliefs help to frame our decision-making and allow us to be consistent and efficient.\u00a0 In local government, there are a lot of them. Sometimes, however,\u00a0our beliefs become so ingrained that we use them as an excuse for not moving forward.\u00a0Our beliefs can\u00a0prevent us from making the change we know we need to make. You may not even be aware of the beliefs that are preventing you or your organization in local government from making the change that is screaming to be made.<\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, these inhibiting beliefs are expressed as what \u201ceveryone knows.\u201d\u00a0If you\u2019ve been around long enough and your organization\u00a0is bureaucratic in any way (what\u00a0local government organization isn\u2019t bureaucratic?), you\u2019ve probably heard a few.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some beliefs that I\u2019ve heard when it comes to working in Local Government:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cEveryone knows\u201d that\u2026<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n\u00b7 You can\u2019t fire government employees.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Most government jobs can\u2019t be measured.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Enterprise fund departments can do whatever they want because they\u00a0make money.<br \/>\n\u00b7 The Police Department gets whatever they want.<br \/>\n\u00b7 The public \u201cloves\u201d the Fire department.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Performance evaluations are meaningless.<br \/>\n\u00b7 The Legal Department will say \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>You can probably come up with your own list <\/b>of \u201ceveryone knows\u201d for your community and local government organization.\u00a0 Logically and realistically, we know that these\u00a0assumptions are inaccurate. Anyone of them can and has been proven false in government agencies across the country. Yet, perceptions and preconceived ideas\u00a0persist.<\/p>\n<p>We are all being challenged to reinvent how public services are being delivered.\u00a0 Our traditional structures, approaches, and models are not sustainable as we move into the future.\u00a0 The shifts we are facing beg the question:\u00a0 \u201cWhat beliefs prevent us from moving forward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As you begin to redefine your organization and chart the future, ask yourself, \u201cwhat is it that \u2018everyone knows\u2019 and how are those beliefs impeding our progress?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every organization has a set of beliefs, or norms, that guide day-to-day interactions and processes.
