{"id":274,"date":"2013-02-02T10:10:38","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T18:10:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=274"},"modified":"2013-02-05T22:25:36","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T06:25:36","slug":"the-interview-is-there-anything-you-would-like-to-add","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/the-interview-is-there-anything-you-would-like-to-add\/","title":{"rendered":"The Interview: Is There Anything You Would Like to Add?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?attachment_id=275\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-275\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-275\" alt=\"interview_jobs\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/interview_jobs.jpg\" width=\"411\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/interview_jobs.jpg 411w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/interview_jobs-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><\/a>It is likely that at the conclusion of almost every job interview, as a candidate you will be asked if you have any questions or would like to add anything.\u00a0 The questions you pose, or what you deem important to discuss at this point will reflect on both your level of interview experience and sophistication, and what you believe are of paramount importance when considering your candidacy.\u00a0 In fact, what questions you ask, and what you say at this point in the interview may affect your ranking and desirability more than any other exchange previously.\u00a0 Some do\u2019s and don\u2019t\u2019s:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do not<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0ask questions that can likely only be answered by the appointing authority if this is an initial panel interview by outside subject matter experts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do not<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0ask questions about wage and benefit details which can better be addressed by H.R. staff, unless this is a final interview, and you have been offered the position and the hiring authority introduces discussion pertaining to compensation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do not<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0ask questions that a candidate should know if they have read the job announcement or done even rudimentary research about the community, organization, working conditions or job duties and responsibilities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do not<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0ask panelists or hiring authorities questions that could be construed as controversial, personal or intrusive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do not<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0ask questions about the circumstances surrounding the departure of the prior incumbent of the position you aspire to.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do ask<\/strong>\u00a0questions about the organization\u2019s mission, values, culture and broad-based goals you will be expected to support if these are not available to candidates who undertake a modicum of research in preparation for the interview.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do ask<\/strong>\u00a0about the hiring authority\u2019s vision, leadership and management style.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do ask<\/strong>\u00a0about reporting lines, professional growth, and development and advancement opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do ask<\/strong>\u00a0about how performance expectations are communicated to you, and what processes are in place to provide feedback, training, periodic formal reviews, and career guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Even the most thorough interviews may not give you the opportunity to present important qualities or qualifications which might be helpful to raters in making decisions about your suitability for the job.\u00a0\u00a0 Take this opportunity to cite special skills or experience, or noteworthy achievements. The key here is relevance and brevity. This is not the place to bring up your coin collecting hobby.\u00a0 You may take the opportunity to elaborate on an earlier question that you believe you answered incompletely, however multiple attempts to \u201cclean-up\u201d or expound on earlier questions will not leave a strong impression.
