a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>man got his car stuck in the mud<\/span>\u00a0and a nearby farmer offered to help get it out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Soon, t<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0farmer\u00a0<\/span>had<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>hitched his horse to the car, and\u00a0<\/span>then\u00a0<\/span>yelled, \u201cPull, Sally,\u00a0<\/span>Pull<\/span>!\u201d but the horse didn\u2019t budge.\u00a0 \u201cPull, Buster, Pull!\u201d\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>yelled next,<\/span>\u00a0but t<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0horse remained still.\u00a0 \u201cPull, Nellie, Pull!\u201d still nothing.\u00a0 Finally, the farmer\u00a0<\/span>loudly shouted<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0\u201cPull, Buddy,\u00a0<\/span>Pull<\/span>!\u201d and the horse jumped into action and pulled the car-free from mud instantly.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cThanks very much<\/span>!\u201d said the motorist, \u201cBut if you don\u2019t mind my asking, why\u2019d you call your horse by the wrong name so many times?\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cWell, you, see, Buddy here is blind<\/span>–,\u201d said the farmer,\u00a0\u201cif he thought he was the only one pulling, he wouldn\u2019t even try.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWhile<\/span>\u00a0very funny<\/i>\u00a0to my 11-year old\u00a0daughter, Samantha, I’ve considered\u00a0what a profound perspective the farmer\u2019s thinking\u00a0may include.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe farmer\u00a0<\/span>likely\u00a0saw an opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0and\u00a0needed his horse to help him accomplish the offer of assistance to the motorist, but the horse seemingly had a history of not wanting to do the \u2018heavylifting\u2019 by himself, so the farmer learned to create a way to\u00a0get\u00a0the horse to get work\u00a0to help accomplish a task he may not have\u00a0desired.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nConsidering<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0circumstance, I\u00a0also\u00a0saw\u00a0the possibility of great risk that can come with deceiving one or more members of an organization as a means to motivate them,\u00a0however\u00a0temporarily\u00a0that may be.\u00a0 The farmer\u2019s handling of the horse\u00a0\u2013curious when we remember that the horse is blind\u2014might very well\u00a0exploit\u00a0\u2018Buddy\u2019\u00a0to get\u00a0him\u00a0to perform.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAnd that<\/span>, too,\u00a0would be a valid view.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nYet\u00a0<\/span>we should\u00a0also\u00a0consider\u00a0the\u00a0possibility that our farmer had\u00a0discovered\u00a0a way to\u00a0keep Buddy productive.<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nIndeed,\u00a0Buddy could no longer see,\u00a0but\u00a0the farmer continued to find opportunities for Buddy to\u00a0contribute.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Though the\u00a0other\u00a0members of the \u2018team\u2019\u2014Sally, Buster and Nellie\u2014didn\u2019t actually exist, there was still an organization that included Buddy and the farmer,\u00a0who\u00a0shared\u00a0a purpose that included\u00a0serving\u00a0others.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ background_color=”#f7f7f4″ The story of Buddy and the farmer don’t offer us the background to understand how long ago Buddy lost the use of his eyes or how, or what his work on the farm typically included prior to incurring his disability. But it is worth considering that the farmer may have actually demonstrated a higher value and commitment to Buddy, even if while using some coercion, by bringing Buddy to opportunities to be productive. Did Buddy believe he was part of a team? Indeed, he must have. Did Buddy want to contribute to the work of ‘a’ team? Again, he obviously did. Finally, was the work and effort Buddycontributed less valuable, or his purpose any less important, solely because there were fewer co-workers than what he believed there were?<\/p>\n
The answer could very well be no. As we know, there are a great many organizations around the world. They come in a variety of sizes, forms, levels of sophistication and volumes. Some corporations employ off-site staff, who contribute daily but never actually meet or know ‘colleagues’ who might perform other work on a main<\/g> campus, at another regional facility, or even from their home…perhaps from another country.<\/p>\nWe also know well that each of these companies are quite often just as effective and efficient in their work, as their staffs successfully communicate, interact and interface directly, technologically, or remotely<\/em> with clarity, consistency and a sustained, shared understanding of their purpose and assignment and suffer little from the effects of distance, compartmentalization, function control or limits of communication. And we know these various ‘virtual environments’ are actually essential to the mission, effort, and success of the companies they are a part of.<\/p>\nThere is immeasurable value in the knowledge and experience that allows us to be adaptable, versatile, and capable of continuing to serve. But a greater value may be found in helping those among us find new strategies and opportunities to succeed. Like the storied farmer who preserved Buddy’s ability to work with a team and be successful, we too as leaders owe those we serve and support the opportunity to succeed through their talents–whatever they may be.<\/p>\n
