Mentoring at its best is a magical elixir which shaves years off your learning curve through mistakes unmade. Thank God, we\u2019ve experienced\u00a0the transformational spirit of amazing mentors. It\u2019s that spirit we hope to pass on in my own mentoring of others.<\/p>\n

Ask anyone who\u2019s ever had an\u00a0effective mentor where that experience ranks in their growth as a leader, and we\u2019d bet serious money they\u2019d put their mentor ahead of any keynote, consulting\u00a0program, book, and quite possibly their 80K MBA. We say that as speakers, consultants, authors, MBA professor (Karin) former elected official (David) and people who\u2019ve had the fortunate experience of having a gaggle of amazing mentors over the last two decades.<\/p>\n

Effective mentorship is unscripted, raw, trusting, challenging and kind. Great mentorship is a two-way journey.\u00a0It\u2019s so human it bleeds into other areas of your life.<\/p>\n

I (Karin) attended a funeral of a great mentor and felt like I\u2019d lost my right arm. A dozen years later I still wonder what he would say\u00a0when faced with difficult challenges. I wasn\u2019t the only one in the room who felt that way because great mentors have ever-widening circles of influence.<\/p>\n

Sadly, few folks I know have experienced that mentor-induced pull toward becoming\u00a0the leader they are meant to become. When we ask my audiences how many of them have had a truly great mentor, it\u2019s surprisingly sad how\u00a0few raise their hands. In Karin\u2019s MBA courses, the number is even fewer. Sometimes no hand is raised. This is our future.<\/p>\n

As a culture, we\u2019re not mentoring well. We think we know this, which is why requests for mentoring as a\u00a0keynote topic is high on the list. \u201cHow do we do this better?\u201d \u00a0\u201cWho must we involve?\u201d \u201cWhy isn\u2019t this working?\u201d \u201cWhat about the \u2018millennial situation?’\u201d<\/p>\n

The Important Stuff<\/strong><\/p>\n

Establish Measurable Goals: <\/strong>As Covey would say, begin with the end in mind. How will you know you\u2019re successful? Determine how you will measure success. We promise you, it\u2019s not just \u201cthat folks feel better.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Select the Right People: <\/strong>If you\u2019re going to get into the business of match-making, do it well. Consider the value of Nemesis<\/a> mentors. What often works best is announcing the program, providing people with scaffolding to make their own matches, and then support.<\/p>\n

Give Them a Good Start:\u00a0<\/strong>Ready, mentor, go is seldom enough. Even your smartest, most creative types can get a little twitchy when asked to do something outside of their day job. We\u2019ve found a half-day kick off workshop including multiple mentoring relationships\u00a0can go a long way in launching them toward success.<\/p>\n

Establish Boundaries: <\/strong>Boundaries are vital. If you\u2019re a mentor, does that mean you\u2019re signing up to be a sponsor? These are key conversations. We\u2019ve mentored a long list of folks we\u2019ve helped to improve, but we wouldn\u2019t put out brand on every one of their careers in support of the next promotion.<\/p>\n

Give Them Something to Do:\u00a0<\/strong>In every mentoring program we\u2019ve developed, we\u2019ve given them easy tools and activities to get them started. \u00a0Organic is great, and some will throw your guidance away. Awesome. Others will kiss it and make it so.<\/p>\n

Consider Alternative Models:<\/strong> We\u2019re \u00a0big fans of alternative mentoring models: speed mentoring<\/a>, mentoring circles<\/a>, peer mentoring, reverse mentoring. Too much to discuss here, but contact us<\/a> to learn more!<\/p>\n

Mentoring relationships can be extremely beneficial to both parties. Use these steps to make it so!<\/p>\n
