{"id":2881,"date":"2014-05-09T15:14:53","date_gmt":"2014-05-09T22:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=2881"},"modified":"2014-05-10T15:16:59","modified_gmt":"2014-05-10T22:16:59","slug":"art-asking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/art-asking\/","title":{"rendered":"The Art of Asking Why?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/resources\/usc-price\/art-asking\/attachment\/alvarado-asking-why\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2883\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2883\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/alvarado.asking.why_.jpg\" alt=\"alvarado.asking.why\" width=\"421\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a>It seems like a simple question \u2013 <em>why<\/em>?\u00a0 We ask it every day.\u00a0 But how often do we take the time to fully answer the question as a means to understand purpose? \u00a0Upon meeting someone new, we typically encounter the question, \u201cWhat do you do?\u201d\u00a0 Most of us have a prepared, canned response to this question, which is usually an abbreviated version of our job description, but what does that really say about why we do what we do?\u00a0 And more importantly, what does that say about our values?<\/p>\n<p>I can easily tell you what I do and how I do it, and until recently, I thought I could tell you why I do it as well.\u00a0 What I learned is that you must ask <em>why<\/em> five times to get to the source.\u00a0 Laree Kiely, President of the Kiely Group, introduced the exercise of asking why five times when she posed the question, \u201cWhy do you exist?\u201d\u00a0 My first two answers were superficial.\u00a0 My third answer required some thought.\u00a0 My fourth answer had me stumped, and my fifth answer required serious self-reflection and soul searching.\u00a0 When I finally got to the source of why I exist, my entire perspective on work, family and life changed.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear that our values are at the core of why we exist.\u00a0 Once we understand our values we can understand the <em>why<\/em> in our lives. Why did I choose my profession? Why did I choose my spouse? Why did I choose my cause? The <em>why<\/em> doesn\u2019t change even when everything else does.\u00a0 Understanding why we exist will endure the multitude of changes we\u2019ll experience in our lifetime.\u00a0 Have you ever changed jobs?\u00a0 Most of us have.\u00a0 Chances are what you do in your new job is different than what you did in your former job, but <em>why<\/em> you do it remains the same.\u00a0 Your core values don\u2019t change.<\/p>\n<p>As leaders, we are responsible for creating environments where asking <em>why<\/em> is encouraged. \u00a0Leaders themselves should ask <em>why<\/em> of others to provoke critical thinking.\u00a0 Finding answers in common to the question <em>why<\/em> creates unity and loyalty.\u00a0 This is why we gather in great numbers at church on Sunday, why we work in an organization with people who are aligned with our values, and why we spend our precious free time with the people we choose.<\/p>\n<p>The art of asking <em>why<\/em> lies in the curiosity factor.\u00a0 It is through curiosity that we begin to dig past superficial answers to arrive at a deeper meaning \u2013 a clearer picture.\u00a0 When we allow our uninhibited curiosity to guide us, we ask the right questions until our curiosity is satisfied.\u00a0 It is important not to let the fear of asking foolish questions interfere.\u00a0 If done right, you\u2019ll uncover incredible insight into your core values.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems like a simple question \u2013 why?\u00a0 We ask it every day.\u00a0 But how often do we take the time to fully answer the question as a means to understand purpose?
