This is a conversation\u00a0about a different kind of self-care. \u00a0Time to time, we hear about banks undergoing stress tests to determine how they would fare in the face of difficult economic scenarios. \u00a0What if you put your career through a similar stress test? Are you personally and professionally prepared for what changes may come your way?<\/p>\n

Let’s think beyond “losing your job.” We need to be more specific and creative.<\/p>\n

Pre-2008 stress tests did not prepare banks for the financial crisis because of a “failure of imagination,”\u00a0according to the Office of Financial Research<\/a>.\u00a0Few tested banks’ resilience in a scenario where national housing prices tanked. \u00a0Brainstorming ways your life can be changed a little or a lot may not be the most appealing exercise. However, that anxiety won’t compare to what you’ll encounter if you are caught off guard later.<\/p>\n

How to go through the Career Stress Test without having a panic attack<\/strong><\/p>\n

This exercise can be anxiety-provoking because you have to consider scenarios you don’t want to think about or scenarios you never realized could happen.<\/p>\n

Take it slow:<\/strong>\u00a0work through a maximum of two scenarios each week.<\/p>\n

Tackle the low hanging fruit first:<\/strong>\u00a0if you’re ready for any of the scenarios, document your contingency plan for those first.<\/p>\n

Add some positive scenarios:<\/strong>\u00a0change can be challenging\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0good!<\/p>\n

Ready? Grab a pen and paper.\u00a0Deep breath.<\/p>\n

The Career Stress Test<\/h2>\n

Change comes in many forms. It comes from many sources. While it is not always catastrophic, it always makes an impact.<\/p>\n

For each scenario below (feel free to add your own):<\/p>\n

    \n
  • How likely is this to happen?<\/li>\n
  • What kind of impact would this have on you? Positive, negative, shrug-inducing? Minimal or major?<\/li>\n
  • If this is something you want to prevent, could you? If so, what is one thing you could do this week to lower the risk of it happening?<\/li>\n
  • If you have little to no control over its occurrence, what is one action you can take this week to mitigate the effects?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your personal life changes<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • You decide to leave your current field<\/li>\n
    • You decide to leave your current employer (not necessarily the field)<\/li>\n
    • You decide to go back to school<\/li>\n
    • Your significant other decides to go back to school<\/li>\n
    • You or your significant other (or even not a significant other) gets pregnant<\/li>\n
    • You adopt a child<\/li>\n
    • A family member, like a parent, moves in<\/li>\n
    • You and so break up, separate or divorce<\/li>\n
    • You or loved one gets sick<\/li>\n
    • A loved one passes away<\/li>\n
    • A loved one loses his\/her job or his\/her business fails<\/li>\n
    • You buy a house<\/li>\n
    • You lose your house<\/li>\n
    • Your rent goes up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Your employer or business changes<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      • Restructuring throughout the organization<\/li>\n
      • Restructuring within your department<\/li>\n
      • Coworker on your team leaves<\/li>\n
      • That other coworker on your team leaves<\/li>\n
      • Your manager leaves and you get a new one<\/li>\n
      • Your manager leaves and you take his\/her place<\/li>\n
      • Your employer or business loses largest source of funding<\/li>\n
      • Your employer or business goes bankrupt<\/li>\n
      • You are fired<\/li>\n
      • You are laid off<\/li>\n
      • Your CEO leaves and upper management is changed<\/li>\n
      • Increased costs lead to a pay cut<\/li>\n
      • A hiring freeze<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Your industry changes<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Demand for your employer or business offerings is cut in half<\/li>\n
        • Regulation within your industry increases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The economy changes<\/strong><\/p>\n

            \n
          • Ever heard of a sequester?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Some ways you can pass the Career Stress Test<\/strong><\/p>\n

            I can’t tell you what to do because this is a very personal exercise. I can offer some ideas for prevention or contingency plans.<\/p>\n

              \n
            • Cultivate at least one additional source of income<\/li>\n
            • Build up an emergency fund<\/li>\n
            • Stay up to date on your industry using LinkedIn, Google alerts and other tools<\/li>\n
            • Talk to loved ones who may be impacted by these scenarios<\/li>\n
            • Keep your resume easily accessible and spend 30 minutes each month polishing the document<\/li>\n
            • Maintain your LinkedIn profile<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              You can’t prepare for every possible scenario. But if you remain cognizant of the fact that change is inevitable, you can stay limber in your career and always be ready.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
