Early in my HR career, I was walking by my boss\u2019 boss\u2019 office (let\u2019s call him Steve) while on a visit to our corporate headquarters in Manhattan. Without leaving his desk, he called out:<\/p>\n

Karin, can you please do me a favor? There\u2019s this meeting that I can\u2019t attend, and it would be great if you could go in my place.\u00a0Sally, the Senior VP of our call center division has an absence problem. She asked me to attend, but I\u2019m just too busy. I think it would be great if you could go talk employee engagement. It\u2019s starting in a few minutes so you should head down now.<\/em><\/p>\n

Honored to be asked, and delighted for the exposure, I eagerly said \u201cYes!\u201d and ran off to the meeting. As I entered the room (apparently late), all conversation stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you?\u201d Sally\u00a0growled.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I\u2019m Karin, Eric couldn\u2019t make it, but asked me to come instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a senior level issue!\u00a0Why didn\u2019t he tell me you were coming? What\u2019s your role? Don\u2019t answer that. I\u2019ll be right back.\u201d<\/p>\n

She slammed the door with a flourish and went to call Eric. Reentering the room a few minutes later, she mumbled, \u201cYou can stay.\u201d<\/p>\n

This didn\u2019t warm my heart. But wait. It actually gets\u00a0worse.<\/p>\n

The VPs around the room had a bunch of ideas on how to \u201cfix those people;\u201d which unfortunately didn\u2019t involve actually talking to them to understand root<\/u> cause. I revealed their omission by putting in my two cents. I was completely ignored and they went on with their planning.<\/p>\n

Later that day\u2026<\/h4>\n

I was on the elevator when the doors opened and Sally walked in. When was this day going to end?! I wished for a cloak of invisibility and hoped she wouldn\u2019t notice me. When we stopped at her floor, she asked me to step off with her for a moment.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve got great ideas, but you\u2019re incredibly clumsy. \u00a0As a manager, you don\u2019t tell a room full of VPs all of them are wrong in a meeting with their peers. You take notes, and then talk with a few of them offline to stakeholder your ideas. You really ticked me off, so\u00a0I couldn\u2019t even process what you were saying. But I\u2019ve been thinking about it and you\u2019re right. I\u2019d like you to lead the HR leg of this project. You help me fix my absentee problem and I\u2019ll help you learn how to navigate politically so you don\u2019t sabotage what could be a promising career. Sound like a deal?<\/em><\/p>\n
