This concept comes from the executive coaching world. The concept of perfection doesn\u2019t mean things are \u201cexcellent.\u201d It means that the things around us \u2013 how we behave, how people behave, etc. \u2013 happen the way they do because we have created \u2013 and live in \u2013 a \u201cperfect system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our beliefs and thoughts drive our decisions and behaviors, for better or worse.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how this \u201cperfect system\u201d works. If I\u2019m overweight, it\u2019s because of my calorie intake and my calorie expenditure. If I believe I can eat anything, I do. When I eat fried foods or lots of sugar or processed foods, and don\u2019t exercise daily, my body simply reacts to the fuels I\u2019m giving it: I gain weight.<\/p>\n

I shouldn\u2019t be surprised. My beliefs lead to this logical consequence of my eating and exercise habits.<\/p>\n

If I have a health issue that contributes to my being overweight, I must do everything I can to manage that issue \u2013 with treatment, healthy habits, exercise, etc. I must change the system so that I live a healthier life.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s another example. What if I believe that my car should always run perfectly? If I don\u2019t do regular maintenance on my car \u2013 tune ups, oil changes, tires checked, recalls addressed, etc. by a qualified mechanic \u2013 I should not be surprised when my car doesn\u2019t start or if it breaks down on the side of a busy highway.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a work example. What if I believe that an \u201cI win, you lose\u201d culture is good for my team and business? When team members treat each other with aggression and selfishness, that\u2019s because your beliefs allow those team members to behave in those ways. In some ways \u2013 probably in many ways \u2013 those behaviors have been reinforced, maybe even encouraged.

Those desirable behaviors have been reinforced and encouraged.<\/p>\n

Knowing the concept of perfection, we shouldn\u2019t be surprised at our \u2013 or others\u2019 \u2013 reality.<\/p>\n

As an executive coach, I can easily see how the concept of perfection plays out in the lives of my coaching clients. The scenarios they describe are the result of their \u201cperfect systems.\u201d I and they shouldn\u2019t expect to see any different behaviors, decisions, or actions, given their current core beliefs and thoughts.<\/p>\n

If you experience \u201cless than positive\u201d behaviors, decisions, and actions in your organization\u2019s culture, understand that people are living in a \u201cperfect system.\u201d They\u2019r acting exactly as you should expect. If you want more positive behaviors, decisions, and actions, change your underlying beliefs and thoughts. Be specific and intentional about the ways you want people to interact \u2013 with leaders, with peers, with customers, everyone.<\/p>\n

That revised \u201cperfect system\u201d will improve the quality of work relationships \u2013 and lead to a purposeful, positive, productive work culture.
