Many of us will remember a catchy tune by Paul Simon from the 1970\u2019s called,\u00a050 Ways to Leave Your Lover.\u00a0\u00a0As I listened to it in my car yesterday during my commute, I found myself actively thinking about trying to follow along with the song as I pondered some strong themes in how we can support those who lead us.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, if you happen to remember the melody of this song, then allow me to provide you a parody of how good followers may very well find supportive roles in their organizations\u2014and to their leaders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe answers are all inside your head”<\/span>
\n<\/span>She said to me<\/span>
\n<\/span>“Successes are easy if you<\/span>
\n<\/span>Seek them logically.<\/span>
\n<\/span>I’d like to help you in your struggle<\/span>
\n<\/span>To be key<\/span>
\n<\/span>There must be fifty ways<\/span>
\n<\/span>To love your leader”<\/span><\/p>\n

Followers above all else need a vision and a clear direction of how and where they can find success in any organization.\u00a0\u00a0Equally important, we as followers should allow leaders to articulate that vision and pursue those ways in which we can add to the group\u2019s success.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said, “It’s really not my habit to intrude<\/span>
\n<\/span>Furthermore, I hope my meaning<\/span>
\n<\/span>Won’t be lost or misconstrued<\/span>
\n<\/span>But I’ll repeat myself–<\/span>
\n<\/span>At the risk of being crude<\/span>
\n<\/span>There must be fifty ways<\/span>
\n<\/span>To love your leader;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Fifty ways to love your leader”<\/span><\/p>\n

A leader is cautious to make sure they accomplish \u201ccommunication\u201d effectively, and to do that, they must be clear on the message they provide and seek to find evidence that the message is understood.\u00a0\u00a0Once they believe they\u2019ve met those objectives, the leader will explain herself with examples of desired performance and behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n

You just cut down a big cost, Ross<\/span>
\n<\/span>Make a new sale, Dale<\/span>
\n<\/span>Complete a review, Stu<\/span>
\n<\/span>And you\u2019ll see more \u2018what I see<\/span>
\n<\/span>Find a new way to save, Dave<\/span><\/p>\n

Share whatever you know, Zoe\u2019<\/span>
\n<\/span>Lend a helpin\u2019 hand to him, Jim<\/span>
\n<\/span>It\u2019ll make a difference, you\u2019ll see<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Help load up the truck, Chuck<\/span>
\n<\/span>Find what it is that they like, Mike<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no limit to do, Drew<\/span>
\n<\/span>Just keep workin\u2019 with me<\/span>
\n<\/span>Find a new path, Kath\u2019<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018So much we can do, Sue<\/span>
\n<\/span>Yes, teamwork is the key<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems to me that highly effective leaders continually recognize a variety of subtle facets of their organization, and they frequently take time to learn more about the people who dedicate themselves to the growth and forward motion of the company.\u00a0\u00a0Just as importantly, leaders actively call upon those they serve within the department to join in the pursuit of new levels of success, and often in the form of supporting colleagues and co-workers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaders also take the time to tell those who are contributing significantly how important they are to the group and to allow them the time to master newly-introduced skills and techniques to accomplish their work.\u00a0\u00a0And above all else, leaders thank their team members directly.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said, “It pleases me\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>To see you having so much fun,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And that you understand that<\/span><\/p>\n

Our work should never be quite done”<\/span>
\n<\/span>I said, “I appreciate that;<\/span>
\n<\/span>And would you please give me one\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>more of the fifty ways?”<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>She said, “Why don’t we both<\/span>
\n<\/span>Just keep on doing what is right<\/span>
\n<\/span>And I believe that very soon<\/span>
\n<\/span>You’ll see our team achieve new \u2018higher heights”<\/span>
\n<\/span>And then she thanked me<\/span>
\n<\/span>And I realized she probably was right<\/span>
\n<\/span>There must be fifty ways<\/span>
\n<\/span>To love your leader<\/span>
\n<\/span>Fifty ways to love your leader<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps most rewarding is the very real developmental process in which followers begin to understand much more fully the rate of their growth and the positive influence they can and do have upon their colleagues.\u00a0\u00a0This is, of course, the very time frame when the strongest followers also begin to evolve as informal leaders among their peers and begin to establish a very new sense of self and value to the organization.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve all known for a long time that great leaders develop a genuine and deep caring for their co-workers.\u00a0\u00a0As followers, we should seek to find ways \u2013 through our actions \u2013 that demonstrates our genuine care and love for those who support and advocate for us.<\/span><\/p>\n
