The leadership team struggled to agree on a direction. Priorities were cloudy.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Have you ever found yourself in the situation of NOT Gaining Momentum?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>And then, just like that, the team started gaining momentum.\u00a0 Attendance at board meetings is now consistently high, our event calendar is clearly defined, and everyone keeps talking about our momentum.\u00a0 Momentum feels great.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t help reflect:\u00a0 How did this happen? How did we gain this kind of momentum? What changed?\u00a0 Here are a few observations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The team has a new leader who is willing to try anything and challenge everything we\u2019ve ever done.<\/li>\n<li>The new leader has a clear vision for the organization\u2019s future and envisions big things.<\/li>\n<li>The team is meeting more regularly than ever before and has created sub-teams to tackle critical issues.<\/li>\n<li>The team has established protocols for communication, using Google docs and the project management tool, <a href=\"https:\/\/asana.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Asana<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Quarterly, facilitated strategy sessions are being held which have produced a new organizational structure, a redefined mission, and a clarification of roles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ball is rolling, and as a result, the team is producing measurable results, and members are more committed to the organization than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>As you think about your team, I challenge you to ask yourself, <strong>\u201cWhat am I doing to build momentum?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your team looks to you to forge the path, to set the tone, to create the momentum.\u00a0 Ask yourself and then ask your team these momentum-building questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If we had no barriers and could accomplish anything, what would we do?<\/li>\n<li>What are our highest priorities for this year?<\/li>\n<li>If we could accomplish just three things this year, what would be the most meaningful accomplishments?<\/li>\n<li>What changes can we make as a team that would have the greatest impact on our productivity?<\/li>\n<li>When we get to the end of this year and reflect back, how will we have defined success?\u00a0 What will we be most proud of?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These questions, and questions like these, allow you to begin a conversation that creates momentum.<\/p>\n<p>I recently had the opportunity to hear guitar virtuoso <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mikerayburn.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mike Rayburn, CSP, CPAE<\/a> speak at a professional association meeting.\u00a0 Mike challenged us to \u201cwrite music we can\u2019t perform.\u201d\u00a0 He said we can\u2019t coast and expect to make any progress. His line was, \u201cCoasting is always downhill.\u201d\u00a0 Momentum requires us as leaders to set a clear vision, challenge the status quo, and believe that anything is possible.\u00a0 Providing vision and an exciting possible future is what all great leaders do.<\/p>\n<p>Have you created momentum lately?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m part of a volunteer organization that went through a bit of a slump in the past few years.\u00a0 We found ourselves begging for board members and scraping by financially.\u00a0 Attendance at events was at an all-time low.
