B. (Banjo) Paterson. These last stanzas raise the question about job happiness and moreover how time is managed. More often than not, these two things are related. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the 2016 \u2018Indeed.Com\u2019 2016 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.indeed.com\/hiring-lab\/indeed-job-happiness-index-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job Happiness Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the top 5 considerations when it came to \u2018Job Happiness\u2019 were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work-Life Balance<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Management<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Culture (of the workplace)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job Security and Career Advancement <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compensation and Benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, in 2016 money was not the major determinant of \u2018Job Happiness\u2019, nor was status. The major factor uppermost in the minds of respondents was the ability to hold a job that was not always forcing other life issues such as family life to compete for time. The nature of management within the organization and the culture that it\u00a0<g class=\"gr_ gr_56 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"56\" data-gr-id=\"56\">creates,<\/g> rounded out the top 3 factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rub, of course, is that Work-Life Balance has an implicit meaning of time management. It intrinsically proposes certain questions. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What are the competing forces that eat into my personal and professional time?<\/p>\n<p>How much of work time has to be done in my own time?<\/p>\n<p>How much of work at home, <g class=\"gr_ gr_48 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"48\" data-gr-id=\"48\">do<\/g> I choose to do?<\/p>\n<p>What would it take to recalibrate things to bring a better and healthier Work-Life Balance?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some things that you can do, almost immediately that may well reset things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing to consider is a change in mindset. Very little will change, if the mindset that has been driving the imbalance remains unchallenged. Stephen R Covey, A. Roger Merrill, and Rebecca R Merrill suggest that we pay attention to what we are doing on a daily basis. Simply, if we do it, we value it. Where you are being \u2018attentional\u2019, ask are you being \u2018intentional\u2019? If your \u2018attentional\u2019 is not the result of you being \u2018intentional\u2019, there is a balance problem and it is likely that will impact the time available for your personal life. What Covey and his colleagues note:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat is the one activity that you <\/span><b>know<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you did superbly well and consistently would have significant positive results in your personal life?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the one activity that you <\/span><b>know<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you did superbly well and consistently would have significant positive results in your professional life?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyze what quadrant your answers are in. Our guess is that they\u2019re probably in Quadrant II (2). As we have asked these questions of thousands of people, we find that the majority of them fall under seven key activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Improving communication with people<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Better preparation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Better planning and organizing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Taking better care of self<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Seizing new opportunities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Personal development<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empowerment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these are in Quadrant II (2). They\u2019re important. So why aren\u2019t people doing them? Why aren\u2019t you doing things you identified from the questions above? Probably because they\u2019re not urgent. P.39.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, when an analysis of what our time is often focused on is done, it is more likely to be Quadrants 3 and 4. If the focus is on Quadrant 1 it is because of the dual effect of importance and urgency. A recalibration of where our energies need to be would see a greater focus on Quadrants 1 and 2, with some attention given when required to Quadrant 3. Quadrant 4 is where energies should go when we are not compelled to focus on the other Quadrants. Quadrant 4 is what this author would refer to as \u2018Administrivia\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States \u2018State Department\u2019 drawing on the work of Covey, give these two tips on time management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time Management Tip #1 &#8211; Learn what Matters Most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn to Distinguish Between the Important and The Urgent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time Management Tip #2\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it Important or Urgent, or both, or neither?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The State Department then observes the following about time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTime is an exact, absolute that continues exists, and is without regard to individuals or human beings&#8221;, according to Newton. But Einstein believed time to be relative to the observer. Regardless of your understanding of Newton to Einstein, we could agree with Newton that for us time is finite and easily measured and allocated into seconds, minutes, hours, days and years. And, we could agree with Einstein that none of us has enough time. Yet each of us has all that there is!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we will have 1,440 minutes. Tomorrow we will get a new allocation. There is nothing we can do to get more or less. All we can hope to do is to manage our absolute, relative finite resource as best we can to accomplish what we will.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See United States Department of State. (ND). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/m\/a\/os\/64934.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>\u2018Tips for Time Management<\/b><\/a><b>\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the State of Queensland (Australia), the Queensland Government give three very clear tips on how to manage time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Setting goals<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting realistic and achievable goals will help you stay motivated and manage your time more efficiently. Work on long-, medium- and short-term goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set goals that are SMART:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Specific\u2014think about what you will need to do.<\/li>\n<li>Measurable\u2014can be checked and measured.<\/li>\n<li>Attainable\u2014can be achieved within the time frame.<\/li>\n<li>Realistic\u2014what you are willing and able to do.<\/li>\n<li>Timely\u2014needs to be done now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Prioritization<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the time to list all the things that you need to get done. Sort this list from most important to least important. You should be honest and realistic when prioritizing tasks to avoid overcommitting to something that may not be achievable within the time frame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Planning<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your list of prioritized tasks will become your plan. You should revisit the plan regularly and make adjustments to it when needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By breaking larger tasks down into smaller, more manageable tasks you will find each task easier to keep track of and achieve. This will also help you to make better use of your time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queensland Government. (2013). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qld.gov.au\/jobs\/balance\/time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Time Management Strategies<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, effective Goal Setting, Prioritizing tasks and Planning your day is the key to effective time management. In the 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Century, the ability to be adaptive to changing circumstances as they arise is a critical and an essential skill for any employee, especially where the use of public funds is involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is, of course, two other reason why having \u2018Time-Management\u2019 skills in your \u2018toolbox\u2019 is important. The better you can manage your time at work, the more effective and efficient that should make you. I am yet to have a discussion with an employer that does not value employees that are effective in what they do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also efficient! The other beneficiary is your family and friends. Where this comes full circle, is simple. To have the ability and the time to spend on a regular basis with family and friends allows you to recharge the batteries. In a part of the year where traditionally in the United States the celebration of \u2018Halloween\u2019 and \u2018Thanksgiving Day\u2019 is important, having the time to assist with the preparations and to celebrate well with your loved ones is important to your sense of well-being and that of your loved ones.
