{"id":3415,"date":"2014-08-16T12:30:39","date_gmt":"2014-08-16T19:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=3415"},"modified":"2014-08-16T12:31:47","modified_gmt":"2014-08-16T19:31:47","slug":"4-essentials-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/interviewing\/4-essentials-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Essentials For Any Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/public-sector-trends\/4-essentials-interview\/attachment\/businessman-sleeping-on-folding-chairs\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3416\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/interview.white_.jpg\" alt=\"Businessman Sleeping on Folding Chairs\" width=\"395\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a>Scenario #1<\/em>: The person you were originally scheduled to meet with is stuck in traffic, and now you\u2019re meeting with one of the managers on her team\u2014and he doesn\u2019t have a copy of your resume.<\/p>\n<p><em>Scenario #2<\/em>: The hiring manager unexpectedly asks 3 members of his team to sit in.<\/p>\n<p><em>Scenario #3<\/em>: Your first interview goes so well, the hiring manager wants you to meet the CEO\u2014quite unexpectedly for both of you.<\/p>\n<p>These things happen in the real world, but it\u2019s important not to let unanticipated changes derail your day.\u00a0 You should always expect\u2014and be prepared for\u2014the unexpected any time you show up for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.govtjob.net\/Interview%20Tips.htm\" target=\"_blank\">job interview<\/a>.\u00a0 Bring the following things with you, and you\u2019ll be prepared for anything\u2014and more importantly, you\u2019ll be able to focus on interviewing your best:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>5<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>copies of your resume (plus one additional copy for yourself to reference during the interview)<\/em><\/strong> The 3 scenarios listed above are entirely realistic\u2014in fact, in many instances potential employers may add some unexpected twists to the interview process just to see how well prepared and adaptable you are.\u00a0 Having multiple copies of your resume with you, ready to hand out if necessary, will help you look organized and prepared.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget to keep a 6<sup>th<\/sup> copy for yourself\u2014you may need it to complete an employment application, and for reference during the course of your interviews.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>A list of your professional accomplishments<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Put together a document separate from your resume that highlights your most significant professional accomplishments.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t need to be limited to 1 or 2 pages (but be practical\u2014flipping through a 10 page document during an interview is probably not going to work), and you could even use note cards if you prefer.\u00a0 Also If you arrive at your interview early, you can review this list prior to the start\u2014it will jog your memory for things you\u2019d like to mention, and give you confidence before the first interview.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>A list of intelligent questions<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Prepare a well-researched list of questions the night before your interview.\u00a0 Try to avoid asking basic questions that can be easily answered by looking at the company webpage.\u00a0 Also, particularly if this is a first interview, it may not be the time to ask about things like benefits, vacation time, etc.\u00a0 If you progress through the interview process, you\u2019ll have an opportunity to ask those questions at a more appropriate time.\u00a0 Instead, ask thoughtful, intelligent questions that are relevant to the industry and the business.\u00a0 This will show that show you\u2019ve done your homework and have an understanding of the company and how you\u2019ll meet their needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Thank-you notes<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 The debate rages on as to whether a handwritten thank-you note is still practical in the digital age, and it\u2019s a fair question.\u00a0 If you have the opportunity, ask the recruiter what the timetable is for making a decision.\u00a0 If the timetable is a week or more, consider a customized, handwritten thank you note (and make sure to get business cards or the names &amp;
