background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; max_width=&#8221;720px&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;0px||0px|&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the problem is that these millennials just don\u2019t care,\u201d Sara shared with us candidly in a moment of total frustration.<\/p>\n<p>We both looked at each other and then at her, \u201cUh\u2026you do realize YOU are a millennial, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, yeah,\u201d she acknowledged, \u201cbut I\u2019m a DIFFERENT kind of millennial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course she is, and so were the people who were frustrating her.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what generation you\u2019re in, we\u2019d bet money you don\u2019t feel like you fit the stereotype.<\/p>\n<p>As we learned more about Sara\u2019s situation, it became crystal clear: she had not set clear expectations and was assuming the people on her team would just know what was required.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an expectation gap, not a generation gap.<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t need to understand how to work with millennials, she needed to learn <a href=\"https:\/\/letsgrowleaders.com\/2018\/08\/02\/how-to-start-team-accountability-when-you-never-have-before\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to reset expectations.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; My boss is so old school. She wants me to do all this crap\u2026 none of it is important, and it\u2019s getting in the way of my real work. I think she\u2019s just trying to torment me. She\u2019s been around a gazillion years. I wish she\u2019d just retire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We dug in a bit deeper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas your boss explained why these things are important?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you asked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morgan shook her head, \u201cNo, It wouldn\u2019t do any good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think your boss has your best interest at heart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sighed. \u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell let us try to explain why he might ask for all this\u2026\u201d We asked a few more questions and helped her connect the dots. It turned out that there were many logical regulatory and compliance reasons her \u201cold school\u201d boss was asking her to approach work that way.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan\u2019s eyes got wider as we explained what we knew of such things, \u201cOh, I had no idea. I still hate it, but now at least I understand it. I guess my boss isn\u2019t really trying to be a jerk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What was happening here was not a generational problem, but a classic example of a manager not connecting <a href=\"https:\/\/letsgrowleaders.com\/2017\/11\/07\/why-to-explain-why-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cwhat to why.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>So much of what gets labeled as a generation gap<\/i><i><br \/><\/i><i> is really a communication gap.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to blame intergenerational conflict on values clashes and work ethic, but these labels distract managers from the real issue: we don\u2019t take enough time to talk to one another.<\/p>\n<h4>7 Questions your Employees Long to Have<\/h4>\n<p>Here are 7 questions we frequently hear from high-performing, frustrated millennials who attend our <a href=\"https:\/\/letsgrowleaders.com\/leadership-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">training programs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we ask if they\u2019ve brought these issues up, the most frequent answer is, \u201cNo, I\u2019m too scared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/320741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(FOSU (Fear of Speaking Up is real)\u201d<\/a> or \u201cit wouldn\u2019t do any good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you want to help break down generational frustration, a great place to start is by talking through some of these questions, which are likely to be top of mind.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How can I truly be successful around here? (I need helping <a href=\"https:\/\/letsgrowleaders.com\/2014\/09\/17\/7-ways-to-help-your-team-deal-with-ambiguity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">navigating ambiguity and change<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Why do we have to do it this way? (Explain the why behind all these policies and processes that seem to be wasting my time)<\/li>\n<li>Why does my work matter? (Help me find the greater meaning in the work I do.)<\/li>\n<li>When you say \u201cI\u2019m not ready\u201d for a promotion, can you be more specific?
