When a company has a bad reputation, no one wants to do business with them, so much so, that others can simply avoid these less-desirable services and take their business elsewhere. However, people often can\u2019t easily avoid or seek out another local government as easily.\u00a0 Therefore, in many ways, it is even more critical that local governments guard their reputation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any service industry, those who do the serving are the individual employees who represent the larger entity.\u00a0 If a local government has a bad reputation, the likely culprit is bad service from one or more of its employees. A government or business is, in essence, the sum of its parts, so selecting the right person is critical. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;60px||0px|&#8221; custom_margin_tablet=&#8221;40px||0px|&#8221; custom_margin_last_edited=&#8221;on|tablet&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much has been written about hiring the right people, and there are a thousand theories and techniques lauded and debated on the need and the value of recruiting and hiring the right employee.\u00a0 The bottom line, however, is you need to seek and find two traits to drastically increase your chances of finding the right fit for the success and reputation of your organization: Integrity and attitude.\u00a0 In thirty-four years of public safety service, I\u2019ve found these are undoubtedly the two most important characteristics to ensuring success.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skills can be taught to an employment-aged individual but personality traits, are pretty much set and not likely to change, though there are no absolutes and anomalies are always possible.\u00a0 Why are these traits so essential to the success of an employee and ultimately the business? It is because these two traits are the compass and the drive that feed everything else, and they are the foundation on which all other qualities and skills are eventually added and exercised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can see examples of this in the sporting world.\u00a0 Think of times that you have heard of ultra-talented or skilled people who were busts because of attitude or integrity; they were missing the foundation necessary to support their talent and skills.\u00a0 Attitude drives the desire to perform. If you have a good attitude you can overcome obstacles and negativity that often creep their way into work environments. Integrity quite simply keeps someone from deviating from what is right regardless of outward pressures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Does That Candidate Have What It Takes?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How then can we test for or measure for these traits during an interview or other limited employment pre-screening process?\u00a0 Full law enforcement backgrounds often involve talking to many neighbors, coworkers, or other people who may have more insight into a person\u2019s long- term behavior\/traits. Most other jobs don\u2019t have this lengthy of a process for selection.\u00a0 It is critical to develop specific questions that can give you a glimpse into these traits. Ask questions about obstacles, how they have overcome adversity in the workplace; insist on specific examples. Ask them to define integrity and give examples of when theirs was tested; in what way(s) were they challenged and why did they make the decision they ultimately did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attitude can be tricky because people oftentimes mistake passion for attitude. I\u2019ve known a lot of passionate people who have bad attitudes and step away when the situation changes into something they aren\u2019t as passionate about.\u00a0 If our paradigm shapes the world for us, then our attitude most certainly shows us how we will interact with it. Attempt to ask adversity questions and ask for specific examples of how their attitude affected the outcome. Those who understand the power of a positive attitude will be able to explain it and give examples willingly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The science of selecting a future employee based on skills and talent must come with the art of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choosing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that employee is imperative for your team.\u00a0 We can write the perfect job description, identify all the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required, satisfy all the statutorily required mandates, verify degrees, and any other plausible due diligence.\u00a0 But, if that person arrives for the first day of work doesn\u2019t have a good attitude and integrity, the chance of success is greatly diminished.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can all be fooled occasionally. Randy obtained his Bachelor\u2019s degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Cal Poly University and is a graduate of The University of Southern California\u2019s Delinquency Control Institute. Randy believes that learning is a lifelong endeavor and he continues to learn from his colleagues and the community he serves. He believes that solving problems is the core of community policing and his motto is, \u201cNever be so constrained by your job description that you stop looking for ways to say yes; if you must say no, say it with compassion for the customer\u2019s crisis, real or perceived, and provide options\u201d. He began his career in 1986 at the University of Southern California. In his 33 years of campus law enforcement he has had the opportunity to partner with many diverse groups to solve problems within the local community, including building a house in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity as part of a community policing outreach. He has served as President for The International Association of Campus Law enforcement Administrators (IACLEA); President of The California College and University Police Chief\u2019s Association (CCUPCA); Chair of the Board for Crime Survivors; he is member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); The American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS); and The Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP).
