{"id":3625,"date":"2014-10-08T20:59:16","date_gmt":"2014-10-09T03:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=3625"},"modified":"2014-10-08T20:59:16","modified_gmt":"2014-10-09T03:59:16","slug":"team-building-5-stages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/team-building-5-stages\/","title":{"rendered":"Team Building: 5 Stages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/team-building-5-stages\/attachment\/team-building\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3626\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3626\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/team-building.jpg\" alt=\"team building\" width=\"421\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a>In order to fully understand the concepts of organizations and how they develop it is important to understand the steps it takes to actually build teams within the group.\u00a0 According to <em>Organizational Behavior (5th ed.), <\/em>the development of a team is divided into 5 steps.\u00a0 The steps are <strong>Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing<\/strong>, <strong>and Adjourning<\/strong>. In an effort to give each of these very valuable parts of the process their due this offering is going to stretch a few months.\u00a0 So here goes, starting with the genesis of a team; <strong>FORMING<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FORMING<\/strong>\u00a0would appear to be the easier part of the process since it seems merely to be a chance to throw 5 to 10 people from a group onto a \u201cteam\u201d and let them get to work.\u00a0 The key to this process is choice and assigned roles for the members of the team. If the entire manager wanted to do was circle the wagons and then give the group work then what you have is less a team and more of what a division or section is made up of.\u00a0 However, in contrast, if what you want is a cohesive group of people to come together to develop, build, and organize processes so they met the needs of the organization then a great deal of care must be placed in the build.<\/p>\n<p>Within the government sector we all know we have people who don\u2019t play well with others and maybe great at what they do but cannot be placed in a team setting without creating disharmony.\u00a0 They are the oil to others water in any setting and must strive in ways apparent to all but themselves to avoid becoming part of the collective.\u00a0 They fight against policy, they fight against change, and they fight against free lunch if it means they can fight.\u00a0 Let\u2019s face it they have been here too long.\u00a0 Engaging these folks is done at your own risk and likely will make the rest of the team who is compelled to work with them miffed at you for forcing it.\u00a0 They also have a tendency to drain the very morale of an entire work group like a life sucking vampire.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the rub, they are part of the group and as such need to be productive.\u00a0 Some methods for developing them can seem awkward and downright insane but have seen some success if you have the stomach for it.\u00a0 When adding them to a group, praise them for their ability to sniff out a problem and then empower them to also identify a solution.\u00a0 Encourage the group to follow their lead; even giving them the ability to lead the group through the team exercise can help them develop skills.\u00a0 Identify what each person, including the tough nut, brings to the table and why this is so important to their success.\u00a0 Meet with them enough to start the on the path so all players know why they were brought together and you have done forming and started the storming stages.\u00a0 The stages will almost always overlap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In order to fully understand the concepts of organizations and how they develop it is important to understand the steps it takes to actually build teams within the group.\u00a0 According to Organizational Behavior (5th ed.), the development of a team is divided into 5 steps.\u00a0 The steps are Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member.
