If you are familiar with my work, you know that my most recent book has that idea as one of the Commandments for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>winning teammates<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Have you taken PERSONAL responsibility for your TEAM results in the past?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Have you felt that the success of a project was completely on your shoulders, regardless of your position or title?<\/span><\/p>\n After thinking about the implications of that statement, many of the people in my audiences will come to me after a conference and share a \u201cbut what if\u2026\u201d \u201cBut what if my coworker is not dependable?\u201d<\/span><\/em> \u201cBut what if their work usually has mistakes?\u201d<\/span><\/em> \u201cBut what if there is a hard deadline?\u201d<\/span><\/em> Many people end up doing more themselves because they haven\u2019t learned\u00a0<\/span>HOW to get the best out of the people they work with\u2026<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>even when their coworkers have previously been unreliable.\u00a0 So, imagine that you accept that YOU are responsible for ensuring your team is successful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>And imagine that you DON\u2019T WANT TO DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n What is the secret to getting your teammates to be more reliable?<\/span><\/strong> Well, you have three pretty clear options: 1. Accept that people at times are going to be imperfect or late and just live with the results. 2. Change your team (get a new job or get rid of the unreliable coworker) 3. Learn how to share\u00a0<\/span>reminders and encouragements<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span>that produce the behaviors you need<\/span>\u00a0 If one and two aren\u2019t realistic options for you, then\u00a0<\/span>option three becomes vital!<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 The truth is that you only get the best out of people who are sometimes unreliable if\u00a0<\/span>you take responsibility<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>for sharing the reminders and encouragements<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>that will inspire them to see the behavior you want as a priority. Sometimes good people look back to point and blame others for mistakes… I call those\u00a0<\/span>rearview criticisms.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span> In basketball, a review criticism is \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you block out that last shot?<\/span><\/em>\u201d In business, a rearview criticism might be \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you get that paperwork in?<\/span><\/em>\u201d\u00a0 But nobody can go back and change the past. So don’t waste your time or upset members of your team with rearview criticisms\u2026 instead, focus on what you CAN CONTROL, and commit to giving\u00a0<\/span>reminders and encouragements.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Instead of complaining after the fact, winning teammates take the initiative to remind and encourage before! Do and say what you need to so others are ready to\u00a0<\/span>make the next play.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 Winning Teammates share reminders and encouragements because they anticipate what their teammates NEED to happen next. Winning Teammates<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>don\u2019t wait until a problem occurs to give rearview criticisms\u2026 they know that their responsibility is to impact the NEXT PLAY and prevent It doesn’t require being rude or getting emotional. But it DOES require that you take the initiative to see what MIGHT become an issue and try to address it PRIOR to the moment that issue pops up! If you are taking responsibility for team results, you have to begin by taking the initiative to look further down the path your team is on and identify possible issues that you can help prepare them for.\u00a0 The trick is to be consistent \u2013<\/span><\/strong> and to be consistently NICE and POSITIVE!<\/span><\/strong> Expect the best out of your people, and they will often live up to that expectation \u2013 especially when you clarify what you need from them and emphasize the importance and impact on the team.
