That \u201cin the know\u201d person is the one YOU need to get to know. How do you find him or her?\u00a0 Here are some clues from my <a href=\"https:\/\/ilinstitute.teachable.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Management Training for Technical Managers<\/a> series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This person typically:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Is very well connected (they are on at least friendly terms with most of the people in the workplace, no matter their job descriptions)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Knows some of the \u201csecrets\u201d of the organization, such as political or personnel issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Is reasonably well-liked by most people at the workplace (they know how to get along with others)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Has an uncanny way to get things done (is resourceful and well-organized, but beyond that knows how to deal with a variety of people.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>May or may not have \u201cformal\u201d power yet has a lot of influence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>I discovered this special person by accident.\u00a0 One of my staff members was struggling in her current role, despite skill in some areas.\u00a0 In a sudden moment of clarity, I discerned that her greatest skill was getting things done through organizational connections.\u00a0 She knew&#8230;<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>People\u2019s secrets<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Who cared about what<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Who pulled what strings<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>The struggles and successes of most of the individuals on staff.<\/span>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>I created a Chief of Staff position for her, and she excelled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; He\/she knows birthdays, anniversaries, family situations, worries, and more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Knows how to get things done by leveraging positive relationships and resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Knows some of the insider political information<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span> <\/span><span>Has his\/her ear to the ground and picks up on details especially regarding people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>In some cases, don\u2019t be surprised if this person is one of the admins\/executive assistants\/office managers.\u00a0 Administrative jobs require handling many details while maintaining confidentiality.\u00a0 Many admins connect with people of all levels in the organization.
