{"id":3746,"date":"2014-11-08T13:44:57","date_gmt":"2014-11-08T21:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=3746"},"modified":"2014-11-16T22:20:21","modified_gmt":"2014-11-17T06:20:21","slug":"five-stages-team-building-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/five-stages-team-building-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Five Stages of Team Building: Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/five-stages-team-building-part-2\/attachment\/team-building-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3747\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3747\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/team-building-.jpg\" alt=\"team building\" width=\"478\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a>Storming is where we begin this month.<\/p>\n<p>When we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/team-building-5-stages\/\" target=\"_blank\">left our newly \u201cformed\u201d team<\/a> they were all standing there smiling and ready to do good deeds in the name of the organization right?\u00a0 No, sorry, I can\u2019t back that up.\u00a0 They were likely stuck with a person they didn\u2019t really want to work with, confused as to why they were even in the team as management clearly must have lost their mind, or wondered who was in charge of this circus.<\/p>\n<p>So all of the aggression and misplaced tension creates conflict which leads to the storms.\u00a0 She said this, we don\u2019t understand that, or he isn\u2019t doing anything and I am sick of it\u2026 Sound familiar?\u00a0 These were just a few comments but they are relevant and make one wonder why as managers we just don\u2019t do the darn thing ourselves and forget engaging our staff.<\/p>\n<p>Problem is we are managing work, and leading (you guessed it) people.\u00a0 If we want to help them grow and create a succession plan for ourselves we need to tap into the storm and harness the wind power, or at the very least get all the clouds facing the same way.\u00a0 Re-identifying the goals, the mission, the workloads, and clearly communicating the needs of the organization so the team can adjust will help them pass through the storming and into the norming stage.<\/p>\n<p>Also not allowing them to wallow in the storm for too long can help them get the norming phase off and running as well.\u00a0 Norming is when the \u201cshe doesn\u2019t work as hard as me\u201d comments turn into \u201cwe got our part done where\u2019s your portion Bob?\u201d Then the pressure starts and the team has begun to self-regulate the work.\u00a0 They know what they are doing and why it is important, they see the goal line and know what needs to be done to move the ball.\u00a0 Now they are pushing each other to get their best work done.<\/p>\n<p>What can you as their manager do to help?\u00a0 Get the heck out of their way.\u00a0 When they need you they will come and see you, call you, or send you the \u201chelp me\u201d email.\u00a0 If you did the job right and developed a method for them to deliver on the goods then they will likely not need you but to approve the product they have successfully produced as a team.\u00a0 The next two phases are where you see the highest level of work product, they can also be tricky.<\/p>\n<p>We now have a team who had normalized the work and was now performing.\u00a0 They are humming along and getting the project close to the end of the line.\u00a0 The inevitable is going to happen and the project needs to end.\u00a0 How do you take a well-oiled machine and tear it down?\u00a0 This is the trickier part of the government organizations.\u00a0 In our world once it\u2019s working we walk away and deal with something else.\u00a0 We shouldn\u2019t, but we do.\u00a0 We get people delivering on the promise we make to our customers and constituents of service over self.\u00a0 When the compliments come in (or in our case less complaints) we are hesitant to throw a handful of ball bearings into the running machine.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes a group which has reached the end of the project can be phased out and moved to new teams to start the forming process all over again; in other cases the team is just dissolved.\u00a0 A real key to added success on the next project is formally recognizing the team, and specifically individuals, for making contributions which led to the success of the organization.\u00a0 Taking the time to notice them will empower the members to be proud of their work, more importantly they will feel vindicated when it comes time to participate in another project.\u00a0 They know firsthand what it feels like to succeed.\u00a0 Team development from the forming through the storming, norming, performing, and into the adjourning isn\u2019t easy but worth the work when a better process or product is the end result.\u00a0 As civil servants we have obligations to provide the best services we can to our customers.\u00a0 These tools can help and will make you a better leader.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Storming is where we begin this month. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member.
