\"networking<\/a>We hear it constantly. \u201cYou need to network\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cNetworking is what you need to do in order to secure employment\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cYou must network\u201d.\u00a0 And so on, and so on, and so on\u2026\u2026\u00a0 But what really is networking?\u00a0 When asked to define \u201cnetworking\u201d, most people don\u2019t have a single definition.\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe the value is in the networking itself but what networking ultimately leads to.\u00a0\u00a0 When asked the question, \u201cWhat is networking?\u201d, most people respond by defining it as some form of communication, an introduction, or a referral.\u00a0\u00a0 These are all true but a new career opportunity usually doesn\u2019t come from these interactions alone.\u00a0 There is more than that.<\/p>\n

We should look at networking as not necessarily an event or introduction but more of a process.\u00a0 It is a process of building a business relationship.\u00a0 This process starts with doing your homework or researching organizations, people, and events that you may attend.\u00a0 Handing out business cards and collecting business cards is not networking. It\u2019s a tactical piece of networking.\u00a0 What if I told you that roughly only 5% of the people I give my business card to actually contact me.\u00a0\u00a0 It is true.\u00a0 Most folks neglect to ever follow up.\u00a0 It\u2019s not so much a matter of handing out a business card but who are you handing your business card to.\u00a0 The more knowledgeable you are in your pursuit, the more efficient you will be.\u00a0 Do your research! Know your audience!\u00a0 Meeting the right people and developing a relationship with those individuals is the foundation you need to set in order to achieve your goal.\u00a0 Follow up is also required in networking.\u00a0 Professional communication is crucial.<\/p>\n

To summarize, networking is not creating a LinkedIn Profile or handing out a business card.\u00a0 These are both tactics that are used to network.\u00a0 The value of networking lies in the relationship created through these tactics.\u00a0 The development of a business relationship allows you to showcase your skills and convey your expertise to the appropriate audience.\u00a0 The impression you make from these developed relationships is the key to your next career opportunity.\u00a0 Employers value quality and they want employees who are going to contribute to their mission and organization.<\/p>\n

So the next time you are asked what is networking, you may want to respond by saying that it is more than a business card exchange or an introduction.\u00a0 Networking is a process to develop a professional relationship to achieve a defined goal.\u00a0 In most cases, this goal is a fulfilling career.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

(Staffing Alliance of Virginia Employers) which is a networking organization for HR and recruiting professionals.
