\u201cA leader who \u2018Leads With Questions\u2019 will often be 10 times more effective than a leader who only \u2018Leads by Telling!\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

How is this possible?<\/p>\n

If you were in a rowboat with your whole team and there were oars for everyone and your goal was to get across the lake as quickly as possible, how many of them would you like to have row with you?<\/p>\n

Silly question!\u00a0 Of course all of them!<\/p>\n

Now imagine that you are seated at your conference table with your whole team and you are trying to figure out the best way to take advantage of a huge opportunity, why would you want to be the only one at the table with your oar in the water?\u00a0 Why would you not want to get all of their oars in the water by asking for their ideas?<\/p>\n

For many years my only paradigm of leadership was that a leader needed to tell staff what to do.\u00a0 i.e. at that conference table, I was the only one with an oar in the water!<\/p>\n

Can you imagine \u2013 all of that brainpower sitting around that table \u2013 and I am only one with an oar in the water?<\/p>\n

BIG MISTAKE!<\/p>\n

By simply leaning forward, looking around the table, and asking your team, \u201cWhat do you think we might do to take advantage of this opportunity? and then listening and then asking \u201cWhat else?\u00a0 What else?\u00a0 What else?\u201d you are likely to hear many ideas you had not thought of \u2013 ideas that might be better than anything you had thought of\u00a0 \u2013 because now you have everyone\u2019s oars in the water!\u00a0 Now you have access to all the brainpower in the room!<\/p>\n

Imagine that you hear an idea from Samantha that is not only better than anything you were thinking \u2013 it is absolutely brilliant!\u00a0 So you lean forward, look at Samantha and say, \u201cSamantha that is brilliant!\u00a0 I absolutely love it!\u00a0 Would you be willing to lead our whole team in executing your idea?\u201d\u00a0 Samantha responds, \u201cI would be happy to!\u201d<\/p>\n

How hard would you guess that Samantha will work to make sure her idea succeeds?\u00a0 Of course, she will give it everything she has!<\/p>\n

Now for a moment contrast this with you being the leader who thinks your job is to tell your staff what to do!\u00a0 You have an idea on the best way to take advantage of the opportunity and you tell your team what your idea is!\u00a0 Then you lean forward and say, \u201cSamantha, I would like you to lead our team in executing my idea!\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0Samantha says, \u201cSure\u201d but thinks to herself, \u201cThat is not a great idea \u2013 but you are the boss, you sign my paycheck so if I want to continue to be employed I better do what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

How much energy will Samantha bring to make sure your idea succeeds?<\/p>\n

Which of the two ideas will have Samantha\u2019s whole heart and all of her energy to make sure it succeeds?\u00a0 Of course her idea!<\/p>\n

One More Advantage of \u201cLeading With Questions\u201d:<\/p>\n

How have you felt when you have had a leader ask you, \u201cWhat do you think we should do?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Valued? Appreciated? Respected?\u201d<\/p>\n

Without having said it, just by asking you,\u00a0\u201cWhat do you think we should do?\u201d your leader\u2019s question communicated all of that!<\/p>\n

So if this is true for how you have felt when you have a leader ask you\u00a0\u201cWhat do you think we should do?\u201d\u00a0how will your staff feel when you ask them\u00a0\u201cWhat do you think we should do about\u00a0 ___________?\u201d\u00a0 Of course \u2013 the same!<\/p>\n
