Whenever I am facilitating a \u201cLeading With Questions\u201d seminar\/webinar I ask, \u201cWho here would like to learn to \u2018Lead With Questions\u2019 in 30 seconds?\u201d<\/p>\n

Almost every hand goes up!\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The reason I ask this question is that I always sense from each audience that almost everyone would like to learn to \u201cLead With Questions\u201d but most imagine that it will require getting a Masters Degree in Questionology!\u00a0 \u00a0Nice idea \u2013 but like becoming a brain surgeon \u2013 not likely to happen!<\/p>\n

Next \u2013 I select one of the participants to see if it is possible to learn to \u201cLead With Questions\u201d in 30 seconds.<\/p>\n

I always tell the person I select that I selected her\/him because I sense they have a photographic memory!\u00a0 (They always smile and by the expression on their face communicate that they don\u2019t think that they have a\u00a0 photographic memory.)\u00a0 I share that all they will have to do to learn to \u201cLead With Questions\u201d is to memorize my \u201c4 Most Favorite Questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

I ask them if they are ready?\u00a0 They always say yes or nod that they are.<\/p>\n

I then ask someone to be our Timekeeper to see if I can really teach someone to \u201cLead With Questions\u201d in 30 seconds.<\/p>\n

With Timekeeper ready I share my \u201c4 Most Favorite Questions\u201d:<\/p>\n

  • What do you think?<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    I then ask if they have them memorized?\u00a0 \u00a0They always do!\u00a0 I then ask them to share them with the group.\u00a0 And they always accurately share:<\/p>\n

    • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Next, I check with Timekeeper to ask if we got this done within 30 seconds?\u00a0 \u00a0Timekeeper always reports back, \u201cYes!\u201d and they often share the exact number of seconds \u2013 was 20-25 seconds!<\/p>\n

      Now at this point, some in the audience look just a little bit skeptical \u2013 like you can\u2019t ask someone \u201cWhat do you think?\u00a0 What else? What else? What else?\u201d<\/p>\n

      So I share that I know what some of them are thinking!\u00a0 I share that this is a conversation.\u00a0 When you ask the first question, \u201cWhat do you think about (some opportunity or issue or challenge?\u201d they will answer and when they pause you can say, \u201cWow this is really good \u2013 what else?\u201d\u00a0 And they will give you more!\u00a0 And when they pause again you can say \u201cI am taking notes.\u00a0 Please continue.\u00a0 What else?\u201d and they will give you more!\u00a0 And when they pause you can say \u2013 \u201cPlease continue \u2013 this is really good \u2013 What else?\u201d<\/p>\n

      When we are asked \u201cWhat do you think about (some opportunity or issue or challenge)?\u201d we all instinctively roll out a safe answer to see how it is treated.\u00a0 Should someone respond with, \u201cThat\u2019s dumb!\u00a0 Everyone knows that!\u201d\u00a0 We are then sorry we answered at all!\u00a0 But if the person who asks us says, \u201cWow This is really good \u2013 what else?\u201d \u2013 we will then feel safer knowing they like what we shared and we will say more!\u00a0 And when they ask again, \u201cWhat else?\u201d we think, \u201cWow \u2013 they think what I have shared is really wise\u201d and we will say more!<\/p>\n

      I have found it really is when we ask the 3rd or 4th question that we get to their \u201cGold Nugget\u201d \u2013 their very best thought!<\/p>\n

      Confession:\u00a0 I have also realized that in the past \u2013 even when I did ask someone, \u201cWhat do you think about (some opportunity or issue or challenge)?\u201d \u2013 that when they paused, I always moved on \u2013 never once asking even one \u201cWhat else?\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0Looking back, I was like the proverbial Gold Miner who stopped mining 6 inches from the Gold Vein!\u00a0 So close \u2013 but no Gold!<\/p>\n

      Now if you are a leader who only leads by telling \u2013 you can begin to \u201cLead With Questions\u201d when in your next meeting \u2013 one on one with one of your staff or in a meeting with all your staff by simply asking her\/him\/them:<\/p>\n

      • What do you think?<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • What else?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        And then of course listening carefully to their answers!<\/p>\n

        Now a question for you:\u00a0 How have you felt anytime you have had a leader\/director\/supervisor ask you, \u201cWhat do you think we should do about (some opportunity or issue or challenge)?\u201d<\/p>\n

        Did you feel: Valued? Appreciated? She\/he thinks I am Wise?\u00a0 She\/he thinks I have something to Contribute?<\/p>\n

        Would I be correct to assume that you felt some of all those things?<\/p>\n

        Without your leader\/director\/supervisor saying out loud that they Valued You or Appreciated You or That she\/he thought you were wise or that you had something to contribute \u2013 just asking you \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d communicated all of that!<\/p>\n

        So if that is how you have felt when your leader has asked you \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d how will those reporting to you feel when you ask them, \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0Of course the same!<\/p>\n

        Henry David Thoreau shared:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \u201cThe greatest compliment that was ever paid me was when one asked me what I thought and attended to my answer!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
