Yes \u2013 they are tempted to make up an answer on the spot!<\/p>\n
How do I know?\u00a0 I used to be that leader!\u00a0 My staff were kind and none of them said it out loud, but I am sure there were times they were thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t think Bob knows \u2013 I think he just made that up!\u201d<\/p>\n
What a heavy burden sits on the shoulders of\u00a0 any leader, who thinks they need to have all the answers!\u00a0 Because we all know that no one can have all the answers!<\/p>\n
Here is what is so interesting \u2013 just having a few simple questions ready to use anytime you are asked a question you don\u2019t know the answer for is so easy!<\/p>\n

Here are mine:<\/strong><\/h4>\nCan you please tell me more?<\/strong>\u00a0 I use this one, even when I think I know the answer \u2013 because so many times I have answered what I thought was the question only to discover that I had missed their question.\u00a0 Asking, \u201cCan you please tell me more?\u201d greatly increases the odds that I will actually understand their question.<\/p>\nWow!\u00a0 That\u2019s a great question!\u00a0 I don\u2019t know the answer!\u00a0 How would you answer?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Many times they will actually have an answer to their question!\u00a0 But of course they might respond by saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know \u2013 that is why I am asking you!\u201d<\/p>\nYou can then respond by asking:\u00a0\u00a0Again \u2013 you are asking a great question!\u00a0 I don\u2019t know the answer!\u00a0 How do you think we might find the answer?\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>They will appreciate that you have affirmed their question and they will likely have ideas of how to find out the answer.<\/p>\nAdditional questions you might ask are:\u00a0\u00a0Who might know?\u00a0 Might we find an answer online?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nThey are likely to have several ideas on where an answer might be found.\u00a0 And then you can ask,\u00a0Would you be willing to pursue finding out the answer and then bringing it back to me?<\/strong><\/p>\nIf you are that leader \u2013 who thinks you need to have all the answers \u2013 is that burden feeling a lot lighter now?<\/p>\n
